A conferencing server accepts a conferencing session call from a conferencing node over a communications link. The conferencing server receives product registration information from the conferencing node over the communications link. The conferencing server transmits the product registration information to a registration database node, and the registration database node stores the product registration information in a registration database. The invention provides a mechanism for electronically registering video conferencing products.

A computer-implemented method and video processing system for positioning windows displayed on a screen of the video processing system. According to a preferred embodiment, the size of the screen is determined, and the position and size of a first window displayable on the screen is determined. The size of a new window to be displayed on the screen is also determined. It is then determined whether there is room to display the new window plus a gutter space outside the first window and within the screen, and the position of the new window is set in accordance with this determination.

A central processing unit (CPU) is coupled both to a display that displays graphic and other data and to a pointer control device that permits a user to selectively position a pointer at a desired location on the display, and to signal the CPU of user selections. A function in the control panel, identified as a 'ungroup' button function, may be selected by a user. The placement of the pointer over the ungroup button function and activation of the button function results in the CPU creating two new top level windows. The CPU reparents the remote and local child windows to the two new top level windows and displays the top level windows with the child windows on the display, thereby ungrouping the three child windows originally disposed within a single top level window. In the multiple window mode, a 'group' button function may be selected by a user, the activation of which results in the CPU hiding the top level windows which will lose their child windows in the grouping operation. The CPU then reparents the child windows to a single top window. The remote and local child windows are reparented back to the top level window including the control panel child window. The CPU then displays the single top level window with the associated child windows disposed therein.

An apparatus and method for modifying the functionality of a computer system based on the dynamically determined operational capabilities of the system is disclosed. The system includes: 1) a video input component for receiving a video input stream including a plurality of video frames encoded in one of a plurality of available video formats; 2) a video decode component coupled to the video input component for decompressing and decoding the video input stream thereby producing a decoded video input stream in a different one of the plurality of available video formats; 3) a video adapter component coupled to the video decode component for converting the decoded video input stream to one of a plurality of available display resolutions; 4) a first timer for measuring a first time interval required by the video decode component to complete decompression and decode of one or more of the video frames of the plurality of video frames; and 5) a second timer for measuring a second time interval required by the video adapter component to complete conversion of the decoded video input stream. The time intervals are stored in calibration tables which can be used to resize a pair of video windows displayed on a video display device.
