An electronic device may include a display module that generates light and an optical system that redirects the light towards an eye box. The system may include an input coupler on a waveguide and a lens that directs the light towards the input coupler. The input coupler may include a prism having a reflective surface that reflects the light into the waveguide. The reflective surface may be curved to provide the light with an optical power. The prism may be configured to expand a field of view of the light. A birefringent beam displacer may expand the effective pupil size of the light. The lens may include lens elements that converge the light at a location between the lens elements and the waveguide. A switchable panel may be placed at the location and toggled between first and second orientations to increase the effective resolution of the light.

Optical systems with reflective prism input couplers

The various embodiments disclosed herein utilize multiple lasers that have different wavelengths and a single detection path. The lasers are mounted orthogonal to one another so that one laser will provide a forward angle light scatter (FALS) signal in the detection path, and one laser will provide a side scatter signal in the detection path (i.e., the single detection optics are approximately in-line with the FALS laser and approximately orthogonal to the side scatter laser). The single detector path spectrally separates the forward and side scatter signals prior to applying them to their respective detectors for measurement.

An over molded reflective optical fiber terminal ( ) generally includes an end portion of an optical fiber ( ) that has been stripped of its buffer ( ), a terminal block ( ), an integral mirror ( ) formed on the terminal block ( ), and an optical element such as a window ( ). The terminal block ( ) is preferably formed from transparent injection molded plastic. The block can be molded so as to define a profile for the mirror ( ). By virtue of this design, construction and alignment of the terminal/mirror system is simplified and costs are reduced. In addition, the reflective surface of the mirror ( ) may be protected against dust or other optical interference. Moreover, a compact reliable terminal system for off axis application is provided.

The respiratory gas analyzer (10), in one embodiment, is used for in-stream analysis of a patient breathing circuit (12). The analyzer includes a source (12) of infrared illumination, a modulator (28) for modulating the infrared illumination on a wavelength dependent basis to yield a modulated signal, a transmitter/detector unit (32) for transmitting the modulated signal through the breathing circuit (12) and detecting the transmitted signal, and a processing unit (34) for determining composition information regarding a sample under analysis based on the detected, modulated signal. The modulator (28) may include, for example, a Michelson interferometer for transforming the illumination into a frequency domain signal. The modulated signal allows for use of a compact detector system at the respiratory circuit interface. In addition, infrared fiber optics can be utilized to minimize instrumentation/optics at the interface.

On-airway respiratory gas monitor employing transformed infrared signals

A photodetector is used to monitor contamination of optical elements within an optical system. The photodetector is aligned to detect nonspecular/diffuse reflections attributable to surface irregularities of particulate matter residing on the surfaces of the optical elements within the system. An increase in the intensity of the nonspecular reflections corresponds to increased levels of contamination on the surface of the optical element. An electronic detector circuit performs signal processing on the photodetector output signal and generates an output signal corresponding to the contamination level. In another aspect of the invention, the photodetector circuit is incorporated into a Raman gas analysis system. The invention also provides a method for detecting nonspecular reflection in an optical resonant system by generating and resonating an optical energy beam in an optical resonant cavity so as to irradiate an optical element within the cavity; detecting optical energy reflecting off the optical element; and generating an output signal functionally related to the intensity of the detected optical energy.

System for monitoring contamination of optical elements in a Raman gas

A Raman gas analysis system uses a half-wave plate to match the polarization of Raman scattered light emitted from a gas analysis cell to a preferred polarization orientation of a diffraction grating. The gas analysis system includes a plasma discharge tube for generating a polarized light beam; a gas analysis cell for containing a sample gas which produces Raman scattered light in response to being irradiated with the polarized light beam; an optical subsystem for collecting and providing the Raman scattered light with a preferred polarization orientation; a holographic diffraction grating for dispersing the Raman scattered light into component light signals; and an array detector for detecting the component light signals.
