A magnetron includes a cathode and a vacuum envelope in which the cathode extends. The vacuum envelope includes a portion extending radially relative to the axis of the cathode. A pair of electrically conducting support arms for supporting the cathode are in electrical connection with cathode supply terminals. The support arms have free ends connected to the cathode by leads. A wall extends across an area of the radially-extending portion. The wall is positioned along the radially-extending portion nearer to an end of the radially-extending portion that is adjacent to the cathode than to an end that is remote from the cathode and the support arms are mounted in the wall.

Magnetron

A magnetron includes a decoupling plate located between the end hat of the magnetron cathode and an output coupling member. The use of the decoupling plate presents a high impedance and gives a resonant circuit which is arranged to be resonant at the operating frequency of the magnetron. This prevents or reduces power loss due to capacitive coupling. In another arrangement, the decoupling plate is mounted to a post on the end hat of the magnetron cathode.

Magnetrons

A magnetron has an output comprising a coaxial line which transmits energy from a wanted oscillator mode as a first coaxial waveguide mode and energy from an unwanted oscillator mode as a second cylindrical waveguide mode. Energy in the cylindrical waveguide mode is intercepted by slots in the coaxial line and absorbed by material . This enables the modes to be separated. Preferably, the output is taken from the axis of the magnetron and the wanted oscillator mode is the &pgr; mode.
