A process is provided for making a blow-molded PET container comprising a wall having a density of between about 1.370 g/cc and 1.385 g/cc, a heat-induced crystallinity of from about 18% to about 25%, and a strain-induced crystallinity of from about 55% to about 75%, wherein the PET container, when filled with a liquid having a temperature of from about 100&#xb0; C. to about 132&#xb0; C. or when subjected to a pasteurization or retort process, will not experience a change in volume of greater than 3%.

PET containers with enhanced thermal properties and process for making same

A plastic container having a sidewall defining a chamber and having a first end and a second end and an opening at the first end into the chamber. A base of the container extends from the sidewall and closes the second end, the base having an outer perimeter portion defining a support structure, an axially inwardly extending perimeter wall spaced radially inwardly from the support structure forming an angle with a horizontal line of greater than about 80&#xb0;, a centrally disposed pushup section in the shape of an axially inwardly extending truncated cone, and a toroidal-shaped channel circumscribing and connecting the perimeter wall to the pushup section. The toroidal-shaped channel has a surface that is asymmetrical about a central axis of the container when the container is under static pressure conditions.

Wave-type pressure compensating bases for polymeric containers

A pressure-motion compensating diaphragm for air and liquid tight sealing, in combination with a cap, of a container. The diaphragm has (1) an edge engaging at least one of the cap and the container, and positioning the diaphragm horizontally in the container proximate the neck of the container and under the cap; (2) a center deflector button; and (3) a plurality of silfon tori segments extending from the edge to the center deflector button. The dimensions and geometries of the edge, center deflector button, and tori segments are predetermined to compensate uniquely for forces applied to the diaphragm and created by pressure changes inside and outside the container that occur as the container is filled with a product and processed through filling, pasteurization, or cooling steps. Also provided is an apparatus including the cap, the container, and the diaphragm for releasably storing the product.

Pressure-motion compensating diaphragm for containers

A plastic container has a base adapted for vacuum pressure absorption. The base portion includes a chime extending from a body portion to a contact ring which defines a surface upon which the container is supported. The base further includes a central portion defined in at least part by a pushup having a generally truncated cone shape in cross section located on a longitudinal axis of the container, and an inversion ring having a generally S shaped geometry in cross section and hinge means formed therein, and circumscribing the pushup. The truncated cone has an overall general diameter that is at most 30% of an overall general diameter of the base and a top surface generally parallel to a support surface.

Pressure compensating bases for polymeric containers

A plastic container having a base portion adapted for vacuum pressure absorption. The base portion including a contact ring that supports the container, an upstanding wall, and a central portion. The upstanding wall being adjacent to and generally circumscribing the contact ring. The central portion defined in at least part by a pushup and an inversion ring that generally circumscribes the pushup. The pushup having a generally truncated cone shape in cross section and the inversion ring having a generally S shaped geometry in cross section. The pushup and the inversion ring being moveable to accommodate vacuum related forces generated within the container.

A blow molding machine for producing a biaxially oriented, heat set plastic container, including a blow mold; a high-pressure gas source; a high-temperature gas source; a fluid source; a mixer coupled to the high-temperature gas source and to the fluid source; a blow core assembly having an exhaust; and a controller coupled to the high-pressure gas source, to the, high-temperature gas source, and to the fluid source. The PET containers produced by the machine have an average sidewall crystallinity greater than about 30%, which allows the PET container to maintain its material integrity during any subsequent pasteurization or retort process of the contents in the PET container, and during shipment of the PET container.

Blow molding machine for producing pasteurizable containers

A plastic container for receiving a commodity and retaining the commodity during high-temperature pasteurization and subsequent cooling that includes an upper portion, a sidewall portion, and a base portion. The upper portion defines an aperture and is sealable with a closure. The sidewall portion, which defines a sidewall diameter, is connected to and extends generally downward from the upper portion. The base portion has a chime section connected to and extending generally downward and inward from the sidewall portion, and a push-up section connected to and extending generally upward and inward from the chime section to close the plastic container. The push-up section defines a push-up diameter, and the ratio of the sidewall diameter to the push-up diameter is at least 1.3:1.0.
