Disclosed are various embodiments of resonant power management of a mobile device. In one embodiment, a mobile device including a power management unit (PMU) including a resonant inverter, a plurality of AC/DC converters, and an AC bus configured to route the AC power from the resonant inverter to the plurality of AC/DC converters. The resonant inverter converts DC power from a power source to AC power that is converted to DC power by the AC/DC converters and supplied to loads of the mobile device. In another embodiment, a method for power management of a mobile device includes monitoring, by a PMU of the mobile device, an operating mode of the mobile device and adjusting an output frequency of a resonant inverter of an AC power distribution network of the PMU in response to a change in the operating mode of the mobile device.

Resonant power management architectures

A multimode battery charger circuit supporting switch mode and linear mode charging operations. In various embodiments, the multimode battery charging circuit includes mode control circuitry, a linear gate driver, a pulse width modulation (PWM) control circuit, a programmable constant current control loop circuit, and a programmable constant voltage control loop circuit. In operation, the mode control circuitry receives a charge mode indication signal corresponding to a desired charge mode. Based on this signal, the mode control circuitry enables either the linear gate driver or PWM control circuit to provide control signals to output transistors coupled between an adapter power port and a battery pack, thereby supporting a plurality of charging modes. In some embodiments, one or more of the output transistors are formed on a common substrate with the multimode battery charger circuit.

Multimode battery charger

A power management system that can include an application processor and a power management unit (PMU). The PMU can generate a regulated output voltage based on control signals generated by a switch control module of the application processor. The control signals can be determined based on a comparison of monitored voltages within the application processor and a generated reference voltage. The reference voltage can be generated based on fed back signals corresponding to the control signals. The application processor and the PMU can be formed utilizing different size manufacturing process technologies. For example, the PMU can be formed utilizing a larger size manufacturing process technology than the application processor.

Split-switcher voltage regulator architecture

A power management unit accurately measures and controls charging current. The power management unit may be implemented more efficiently than prior designs, leading to cost savings in the implementation of the power management unit as well as in the implementation of the device that incorporates the power management unit. The power management unit incorporates a model of an external charge control device (e.g., a transistor) and uses that model in a way that allows the power management unit to eliminate external device pins and other circuitry.

A communications device is disclosed that implements a phase-locked-loop to multiply a clock signal provided to a power management unit (PMU) by a variable integer value. Multiplying the PMU clock signal provides a second clock signal where the second clock signal is characterized by a fundamental component with one or more harmonics of the fundamental component that differ from the fundamental component and the one or more harmonics of the PMU clock signal. The fundamental component with one or more harmonics of the second clock signal does not occupy the same communication channel as the transmission communication signal of the communications device. Thus, minimizing the degradation of the transmission communication signal.

An integrated circuit is disclosed that contains both a PMU and another processing portion, such as a baseband. Because of the limited pins devoted to the PMU, the PMU receives most of its signals through the other processing portion of the integrated circuit. Thus, in order to protect the PMU, the integrated circuit isolates the PMU portion from receiving different signals from the other processing portion until after certain conditions are satisfied. In addition, the integrated circuit includes a GPIO pin bank in the other processing portion that can be freely configured so as to allow for testing of the PMU.
