A process for preparing a surfactant, useful for dispersing tackifier resins in aqueous media, comprises reacting an &#x3b1;,&#x3b2;-unsaturated carboxylic acid or anhydride, or an ester thereof, with a terpene- or hydrocarbon-based resin to form an adduct, then reacting the adduct with a polyalkylene polyol to yield the surfactant. In a related embodiment, the surfactant is subsequently functionalized. Also disclosed are surfactants prepared using a disclosed process; compositions comprising a disclosed surfactant and a tackifier resin; aqueous dispersions comprising a disclosed surfactant; tackifier resin and water; adhesive compositions comprising a disclosed aqueous dispersion and a polymer latex; and pressure sensitive adhesive overlays prepared using a disclosed adhesive composition.

Terpene resin and hydrocarbon resin-based surfactants and aqueous dispersion of tackifier resins

Terpene resin-and hydrocarbon resin-based surfactants and aqueous dispersion of tackifier resins

The specification discloses a method for making low softening point modified terpene-phenol resins having improved properties. In the process, phenol is reacted in an organic solvent containing a Lewis acid catalyst with an acyclic mono-unsaturated olefin and terpene under reaction conditions sufficient to produce an alkyl-modified terpene-phenol resin at a relatively high yield having a softening point in the range of from about 70.degree. to about 110.degree. C., a Gardner color below about 6 and a polydispersity index below about 1.5. Due to its relatively low Gardner color number, the resin may be used substantially as produced avoiding additional decoloration steps which result in reduced product yield and increased cost. The product contains less volatile components and has improved compatibility with A-B and A-B-A copolymers as compared with many conventional modified terpene-phenol resins.

Method for making modified terpene-phenol resins

The specification discloses a method for producing low softening point beta-pinene based polyterpene resins having an essentially unimodal molecular weight distribution, as well as resins made by the method. In the process a beta-pinene monomer is reacted with an olefinic co-monomer in the presence of a Lewis acid catalyst and a co-catalyst under reaction conditions sufficient to produce a beta-pinene-based copolymer having a softening point in the range of from about 85.degree. to about 125.degree. C., an essentially unimodal molecular weight distribution, and a bound chlorine level of less than about 400 ppm. Because of their low softening points and essentially unimodal molecular weight distributions, the beta-pinene-based resins of the invention are expected to exhibit improved compatibility with block copolymers used in modern adhesive formulations.

Low softening point beta-pinene-based resins with improved molecular

A process for preparing a terpene-phenol resin with a softening point in the range of from about 80.degree. C. to about 110.degree. C. The method comprises preparing a reaction mixture including a terpene, phenol and a complex of boron trifluoride. The boron trifluoride complex is selected from the group consisting of a ether complex of boron trifluoride, wherein the ether has an molecular weight in the range of from about 46 to about 140, and an organic acid complex of boron trifluoride, wherein the organic acid has a molecular weight in the range of from about 46 to about 300. The reaction mixture is maintained at a temperature in the range of from about 50.degree. C. to about 90.degree. C. for a period of time sufficient to produce the .alpha.-pinene-phenol resin which is then recovered from the reaction mixture. The terpene may be selected from the group consisting of .alpha.-pinene, .beta.-pinene, .delta.-3-carene, dipentene, limonene and mixtures of those terpenes.
