Embodiments include techniques for estimating unknown or missing values for parameters of a motor based on high-level motor information and using the estimated parametric values in generating an executable model for modeling the behavior of the motor. An aspect of the techniques involves assumptions used to establish the predetermined parametric values that are applied to the algorithm for deriving estimates of the unknown parametric values for the motor. The estimated parametric values may then be used in the executable model of the motor to enable development and simulation of a plant (e.g., a closed loop system) including a plant model having a dynamic controller model and a lumped parameter model of a modeling environment of a technical computing environment executing on a data processing system. The simulation of the plant loop can be sufficient to test the dynamic (e.g., feedback-based) controller within a closed loop system, e.g., test motion control of a motorized vehicle seat.

Systems and method for parameter estimation for a permanent magnet synchronous machine

A plug-in hybrid electric vehicle operates the engine and/or traction motor in response to energy costs or prices received from an external source, such as a user or network. The vehicle can include a battery; an engine; an electric motor; a memory to store a battery charge point, and a controller to modify the battery charge point in response to arbitration criteria to control battery charging from the engine. The arbitration criteria can be based at least partially on fuel cost for the engine. The arbitration criteria can be based at least partially on electricity cost. The arbitration criteria can also include location of the vehicle. The controller may alter a deadband between charging the battery with the engine and discharging the battery to power the traction motor based on the arbitration criteria.

Cycle error correction is performed in an electronic power system to compensate for a difference between an AC grid side frequency and an AC load side frequency. The electronic power system can comprise an electronic power inverter, such as one usable with an uninterruptible power supply. Cycles of signals indicative of the AC grid power and the AC load power are counted and compared to obtain a cycle error value. If the cycle error value exceeds a first value to indicate that AC load side frequency is too high or too low, then compensation is performed to change the AC load side frequency to be closer to the AC grid side frequency. If the cycle error value falls below a second value to indicate that the AC grid side frequency and AC load side frequency are sufficiently close to one another, then the compensation is deactivated.

Method and apparatus for cycle error correction for a power converter device, such as an electronic power inverter

Cycle error correction is performed in an electronic power system to compensate for a difference between an AC grid side frequency and an AC load side frequency. The maximum power point (MPP) of a photovoltaic array that can be coupled to power inverter is determined. A capacitor on a DC-bus side of the inverter is used as a load from which I-V characteristics of the photovoltaic array can be generated. The photovoltaic array is connected to the capacitor, which has been previously discharged by a bleed down resistor. Short circuit current, open circuit voltage, and values of current and voltage as the capacitor charges are determined and used to generate I-V characteristics of the photovoltaic array. From the I-V characteristics, the MPP can be calculated.

Method and apparatus for determining a maximum power point of photovoltaic cells

A method and apparatus for improving speed measurement quality in systems having multi-pole machines is taught. The method compensates for pole misalignment by computing speed based upon moving average techniques. In one embodiment, a moving average speed averaged over a complete interval of rotation is determined, based upon measurements of one or more magnetic pole position sensors for magnetic pole location. In another embodiment, a time interval between two poles is averaged over one or more rotational periods, and the average time interval is used to determine the moving average speed. Computation of the moving average speed reduces errors in speed measurements due to pole misalignment and may provide for smaller control adjustment times for controlling motor speed variability. In one embodiment, the speed measurement system includes a multi-pole rotor, and a controller having a capture timer and a buffer.

Method and apparatus for improving speed measurement quality in multi-pole machines

A power system employs an outer voltage feedback loop and an inner current feedback loop to control a power converter, such as a DC to AC inverter for transferring electrical power between a power source, for example a photovoltaic array, and a load, for example a power grid. The outer loop accommodates variations in the output of the power source, for example accommodating anomalies in IV characteristics such as IV droop characteristic associated with photovoltaic cells. The outer loop may employ a first control regime or a second control regime, for example, dependent on whether a DC bus voltage or power is smaller than a value corresponding to measurement resolution or expected noise.
