A mine neutralizing device that includes a buoy. The buoy includes a mine neutralizing device capable of swimming to an undersea mine to neutralize it. A method for neutralizing undersea mines includes locating an undersea mine, placing a buoy containing a mine neutralizer near the mine, and swimming the mine neutralizer to the undersea mine.

Embodiments of the invention is directed to a portable identification object (e.g., ID card), an object recognition system (e.g., card reader system), and a method of identity verification or authentication utilizing the portable identification object and the object recognition system. Illustratively, the ID Card incorporates an optical MEMS that, in a passive aspect, exhibits amplitude modulation, wavelength selectivity and/or optical phase modulation with respect to an input signal provided by the card reader system; and, in an active aspect, exhibits amplitude modulation, wavelength selectivity and/or optical phase modulation with respect to an input signal provided by the card reader system based on specific stimulation of the MEMS. MEMS stimulation may be activated by the card reader system in response to a selective user input (e.g., PIN) and algorithmic processing provided by the card reader system. Resultant signals produced by the MEMS ID card and read by the card reader are compared to results stored in a database. An identity or authentication determination can then be made based on the validity of the comparison.

MEMS-based security system

A method for mitigating modal dispersion in a multimode optical fiber involves launching a diffractionless optical beam, such as a Bessel beam, into a multimode optical fiber. A fiber optical transmission system includes a multimode optical fiber transmission medium having an input end and an output end, an optical signal transmitter in communication with the input end of the multimode optical fiber medium, means for converting the optical signal into a diffractionless optical signal, means for launching the diffractionless optical signal in the input end of the multimode optical fiber transmission medium, means for outputting the propagated optical signal from an output end of the multimode fiber transmission medium, and a receiver that receives the optical signal from the output means. Fiber optic communication systems employing the invention embodiments include point-to-point transmission links, local area networks and WDM systems including coarse wavelength division multiplexing and dense wavelength division multiplexing systems.

Method and apparatus for mitigation of modal dispersion effects in multimode fiber

A rack of electronic equipment is convection cooled. Each unit in the rack has oblique cooling fins oriented in a same direction, to cause heated air to flow to a hot air pathway by a chimney effect, and to draw surrounding air along a cool air pathway to each of the units. A preferred unit has two housing sections thermally insulated from each other. Each housing section has its cooling fins on a side surface, some of the fins being aligned with fins on the other section, so that cooling air flows first over the cooler section and then over the hotter section. The cooler section is arranged for enhanced heat transfer from a heat sensitive element, and heat liberating units are heat sinked to the hotter section.
