A power unit for a front drive vehicle having a horizontally opposed engine mounted longitudinally, a clutch, a transmission and a differential, in which a differential housing integrally formed with a transmission housing is disposed at a space adjacent to the frontally offset cylinder block of left or right cylinder blocks and a left and right axle shaft is extended from the differential housing respectively. Further, the differential housing is connected by a fastening bolt with a slide bush to a lower case of the engine so as to support the reaction force derived from the axle shafts. The power unit thus constituted offers a short length of a front overhang of the vehicle and the compactness of a power unit.

A system for controlling a valve mechanism for an internal combustion engine has a valve timing device for changing the valve timing of an exhaust valve of the engine, and a changing device for changing the opening duration of an intake valve of the engine. A detector is provided for detecting a cold engine state and for producing a cold engine signal. In response to the cold engine signal the valve timing device operates to advance the opening timing of the exhaust valve and to reduce the opening duration of the intake valve.

A valve mechanism has a low-speed cam and a high-speed cam, a low-speed rocker arm operatively connected with a valve and a high-speed rocker arm. A changeover pin is provided for connecting the low-speed rocker arm and the high-speed rocker arm to each other so as to be rocked together by the high-speed cam. The changeover pin is slidably mounted in the high-speed rocker arm. A flat engaging face is formed on a front portion of the changeover pin so as to be engaged with a shaft provided for connecting both of the rocker arms.

Valve mechanism for an internal combustion engine

A valve mechanism has a low-speed cam and a high-speed cam, a low-speed rocker arm operatively connected a valve and a high-speed rocker arm. A changeover device is provided for connecting the low-speed and high-speed rocker arm with each other so as to be rocked together by the high-speed cam. A roller follower is rotatably mounted on a shaft provided in the low-speed rocker arm. The high-speed rocker arm has a slipper engaging with the high-speed cam. The changeover device has a piston slidably mounted in the high-speed rocker arm so as to connect the high-speed rocker arm with the low-speed rocker arm.

A hydraulic valve lifter is disposed between a cam and a valve. The hydraulic valve lifter comprises a cylindrical lifter body, a cam piston slidably mounted in the lifter body, and a lifter piston slidably mounted in the lifter body. The cam piston engages with the cam and the lifter piston engages with the valve. A hydraulic circuit is provided for supplying oil to an oil chamber in the valve lifter. An electromagnetic relief valve is provided in a relief passage for draining the oil chamber. The relief valve is closed in accordance with engine operating conditions, thereby controlling the valve timing.
