Facsimile image data received from a normal facsimile apparatus connected to a general telephone network can be transmitted as an e-mail to the e-mail address of a computer network such as a LAN or the like designated by the source facsimile apparatus. An apparatus has a LAN I/F (-) for connecting to the LAN, and a line I/F (-) for connecting to the public telephone network. Upon reception of a remote instruction from the public telephone network, a CPU (-) converts received facsimile image data into e-mail data, and transmits the converted e-mail data to the e-mail address designated by the received remote instruction.

There are provided a communication apparatus and method that enables the retransmission of an electronic mail if an error occurs in the transmission of the electronic mail due to its excessive data size, by reducing the data capacity of the electronic mail without taking time and labor, and a program for implementing the method. In a digital copying machine as the communication apparatus, when an electronic mail that notifies an error relating to an electronic mail transmitted with image data attached is received, the error notification electronic mail is analyzed. If an error that is attributable to the data capacity of the electronic mail is detected from the analysis result, the image data attached to the electronic mail for which the error notice has been received is acquired and the capacity of the image data is reduced by lowering its resolution. The electronic mail to which the image data thus reduced in capacity is attached is retransmitted.

In an image forming apparatus which is connected to a network (), and forms an image on the basis of data acquired from the network, upon receiving a URL that designates image data to be acquired from a console, the URL is interpreted, and a data request is submitted to a server via the network on the basis of the interpretation result. Image data sent from the server in response to that data request is stored. If the image data is a JPEG image, an image process that warrants excellent tone reproduction is made; if the image data is a GIF image, an image process that warrants high resolution is made, and the processed image data is output to a printer to print it out.

A data transmission system avoids charging of line utilization fees when it is attempted to send data to a destination incapable of receiving the data and can be readily operated even by an operator having little technical knowledge. By storing function information relating to the terminals of a plurality of parties, the system automatically determines prior to transmission whether data is capable of being transmitted to a destination. On the basis of the function information and the data to be transmitted, a list of parties which are and are not capable of receiving a transmission is displayed on a CRT, thereby enabling the operator to visually identify in advance which parties can and cannot be sent data. The system makes it possible to identify at least the form of data to be transmitted and to display the list of parties which are and are not capable of receiving a transmission.
