A temperature detection circuit and two RAMs are connected to a conversion circuit for converting image data into voltage designation signals and outputting the signals to a signal electrode driver. The temperature detection circuit detects the temperature of a liquid crystal display element as one of conditions which influence the behavior of liquid crystal molecules. One RAM is used to store a conversion table in which voltage designation signals for designating effective voltage to be applied to a liquid crystal layer are preset for image data for each predetermined temperature range of the liquid crystal display element. The other RAM is used to store input image data. In the conversion table, the number of different voltage designation signals in a high-temperature range is set to be smaller than that of different voltage designation signals in a normal temperature range. The conversion circuit reads out voltage designation signals in accordance with a detection signal from the temperature detection circuit and image data, and outputs the signals to the signal electrode driver. With this operation, effective voltages corresponding to the voltage designation signals are applied to the liquid crystal layer, and a color display with excellent perceptibility can always be obtained regardless of the temperature of the liquid crystal display element.

The liquid crystal apparatus has a segment substrate and a common substrate. Segment electrodes are formed on the segment substrate, while common electrodes are formed on the common substrate. A liquid crystal composition is sealed between the segment and common substrates with a seal member. The segment and common electrodes, the liquid crystal composition and the seal member constitute an elongated shatter portion including light shutters arranged in two rows. Liquid crystal reservoir portions are formed between the substrates and coupled to the shutter portion. The liquid crystal reservoir portions are resilient and thus can be deformed to suppress a change in the pressure applied on the liquid crystal composition due to a change in the volume of the liquid crystal composition. As a result, the formation of bubbles in the shutter portion can be prevented.

An image forming apparatus has a light source, and one or more liquid crystal units for forming a latent image on the photosensitive drum by controlling the passage of the light from the light source between the light source and the drum. The liquid crystal units have a plurality of shutter arrays arranged with a plurality of microshutters. The microshutter has a miniature region for controlling the passage of the light, and the regions are different at every microshutter for forming the individual shutter arrays.

A liquid crystal apparatus has first and second liquid crystal substrates opposing each other. Segment electrodes are formed on the inner surface of the first substrate. Common electrodes are formed on the inner surface of the second substrate. Seal members seal a liquid crystal composition in a predetermined region between the segment electrodes and the common electrodes. Light shutters are formed by these electrodes and the liquid crystal composition sealed therebetween. In order to reduce influence of a hysteresis effect in the liquid crystal composition when a high frequency electric field is applied, the liquid crystal composition has a dielectric scattering phenomenon in which its dielectric anisotropy in response a low frequency electric field is larger than the absolute value of its dielectric anisotropy in response a high frequency electric field.
