A watercraft propulsion system includes a bow thruster to generate a lateral propulsive force, a propulsion device on a stern of a hull and having a variable steering angle, and a controller configured or programmed to control the bow thruster and the propulsion device to perform a fixed point holding control to maintain a position and an azimuth of the hull. The fixed point holding control includes a translation mode in which the hull position is maintained by controlling the propulsive force of the propulsion device with the steering angle set to a translation mode steering angle and the hull azimuth is adjusted by controlling the propulsive force of the bow thruster, and a bow turning mode in which the hull azimuth is adjusted by controlling the propulsive forces of the bow thruster and the propulsion device with the steering angle set to a bow turning mode steering angle.

A marine vessel maneuvering system includes an operator, propulsion device controllers each configured or programmed to control driving of a respective propulsion device based on an operation signal from the operator, a first communication bus to transmit the operation signal to some of the propulsion device controllers, a second communication bus to transmit the operation signal to a remainder of the propulsion device controllers excluding the some of the propulsion device controllers, and a gateway device to connect the first communication bus to the second communication bus such that the first communication bus and the second communication bus communicate with each other.

A watercraft maneuvering system includes watercraft maneuvering stations to steer and adjust a propulsive force of a watercraft and including a main station including a steering wheel to steer the watercraft and an acceleration lever to adjust the propulsive force, and a substation spaced apart from the main station and including a joystick to both steer the watercraft and adjust the propulsive force. By operating a joystick button provided in the substation, an operative station may be switched from the main station to the substation. At the same time, a control mode may be switched to a joystick mode.

In a swaying mode of a watercraft, a controller sets either of a first shift mechanism and a second shift mechanism to a forward moving state and sets the other of the first and second shift mechanisms to a rearward moving state, while controlling a rudder angle of a first marine propulsion device and a rudder angle of a second marine propulsion device such that a net thrust of a thrust generated by the first marine propulsion device and a thrust generated by the second marine propulsion device is oriented in a sideways direction. When setting the first shift mechanism to the forward moving state and setting the second shift mechanism to the rearward moving state in the swaying mode, the controller switches the second shift mechanism to the rearward moving state and then switches the first shift mechanism to the forward moving state after a delay at the start of the swaying mode.

System for and method of controlling watercraft

A controller for a watercraft changes a rudder angle of a marine propulsion device by controlling a steering actuator based on a target yaw rate. The controller determines which of rightward turning and leftward turning is being made by the watercraft. The controller imposes a limitation on the leftward target yaw rate when the rightward turning is being made by the watercraft. The controller imposes a limitation on the rightward target yaw rate when the leftward turning is being made by the watercraft.
