Novel optically active polyacetylene derivatives exhibiting liquid crystallinity; liquid crystal compositions containing the derivatives; and moldings thereof. Specifically, polyacetylene derivatives which have helical structure of rigid-rod shape and which exhibit a liquid crystal phase either in a solvent containing an organic solvent as the main component or in a molten state as well as electric field orientation; liquid crystal compositions containing the derivatives; and moldings thereof. More specifically, polyacetylene derivatives having helical structure of rigid-rod shape as represented by the general formula [1]; liquid crystal compositions containing the derivatives; and moldings thereof: wherein Rand Rare each independently aminocarbonyl of an amino acid having an ester linkage with Calkyl or carbonylamino of an amino acid having an amide linkage with Calkyl, the amino acid being achiral one, or chiral one of (S)- or (R)-configuration, or a racemic mixture composed of both antipodes; and X is a number satisfying the relationship: 0&#x3c;X&#x2266;1.

Polyacetylene derivatives

Disclosed are: a method for production of a polyisocyanide derivative having a stable helical main chain structure with a right-handed or left-handed helix or a mixture thereof from a single type of monomer by polymerizing an aromatic isocyanate having a substituent harboring a structure &#x2014;CONH in the aromatic ring and a hydrophobic moiety having 6 or more carbon atoms in a polymerization solvent, wherein the direction of the helix depends on the polarity of the polymerization solvent; a poly(aromatic isocyanide) derivative produced by the method; and an aromatic isocyanide which is useful as a monomer for use in the production of the poly(aromatic isocyanide) derivative.

Polyisocyanide derivative having controlled helical main chain structure

A process to produce a polymer liquid crystalline composition having temperature dependency of desired circular polarization selective reflection wave length property by only mixing two or more kinds of starting materials having different weight-average molecular weight comprising, mixing two or more kinds of rigid rodlike helical polymers with chiral side chains having different weight-average molecular weight synthesized from same molecules and having same repeating unit whose molecular weight distribution defined by the ratio of weight average molecular weight/number average molecular weight is from 1.00 to 1.25, and controlling weight average molecular weight, number average molecular weight and molecular weight distribution by mixing ratio.

Process for producing liquid crystal of desired properties by mixing together at least two rigid rodlike helical polymers with narrow molecular weight distributions and different weight-average molecular weights with chiral side chains
