A rotor includes a rotor core, first magnetic poles that respectively include a plurality of permanent magnets and have a first polarity provided by the permanent magnets, and second magnetic poles that are each formed between the permanent magnets adjacent to one another and are salient poles having a polarity different from the first polarity. &#x3b8;im and &#x3b8;is satisfy the relation &#x3b8;im&#x3e;&#x3b8;is. &#x3b8;om and &#x3b8;os satisfy the relation (&#x3b8;om&#xd7;1.1)&#x2265;&#x3b8;os&#x2265;(&#x3b8;om&#xd7;0.9). The rotor thus obtained can suppress increase in cogging torque while suppressing decrease in torque.
