A process for preparing high absorptivity granular sodium phosphate mixtures made of sodium tripolyphosphate, pyrophosphates, metaphosphates and orthophosphates by hydrating and dehydrating a mixture comprising sodium tripolyphosphate in major proportion, and recovering the high absorptivity granular sodium phosphate mixture.

A method of disposing of wastes containing heavy metal compounds by neutralizing the wastes, oxidizing the neutralized wastes, then solidifying the oxidized wastes using conventional mineral binding agents such as Portland cement. A continuous process for preparing nitrilotriacetonitrile in which the reactants, formaldehyde, hydrogen cyanide, and either ammonia or hexamethylenetetramine are reacted first in a mixing reactor, preferably a circulating loop reactor at from about 90.degree. C. to about 120.degree. C., then reacted in a plug flow tubular reactor at from about 95.degree. C. to about 120.degree. C., then after cooling the reaction mixture crystalline nitrilotriacetonitrile is recovered.

A machine dishwashing composition is provided which comprises the following: (a) from 5 to 90 percent by weight of a compound corresponding to the formula ##STR1## wherein M is alkali metal or ammonium and wherein n is a number from 1 through 3, and wherein R is selected from an alkyl radical having from 1 to 20 carbon atoms, an alkenyl radical having from 1 to 20 carbon atoms, an alkynyl radical having from 1 to 20 carbon atoms, a cycloalkane radical having from 3 to 20 carbon atoms, an alkanol radical having from 2 to 20 carbon atoms, an ether radical having at least 3 carbon atoms, an aryl radical having at least 6 carbon atoms, a substituted aryl radical having at least 6 carbon atoms wherein the substituents are halogen, nitro, amide or carboxyalkyl substituents, aralkyl radicals having at least 7 carbon atoms and arylether radicals having at least 7 carbon atoms, and (b) from 0 to 5 percent by weight of a low-foaming anionic or nonionic surfactant, (c) a chlorine-providing material in an amount sufficient to provide from 0.5 percent to 2 percent by weight available chlorine, and (d) from 5 percent to 30 percent by weight soluble sodium silicate having an SiO.sub.2 to Na.sub.2 O mole ratio of from 1:1 to 3.2:1.

The compound of the formula: ##STR1## is useful as an intermediate to prepare a compound having the generic formula ##STR2## wherein X is selected from groups to provide tetrahydropyran type compounds, 1,4 dioxane type compounds or tetrahydrofuran type compounds, and R is selected from the group consisting of alkali metal, NH.sub.4.sup.+, NH(CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 OH).sub.3.sup.+, and lower alkyl, branched or straight chain, with up to about C.sub.20 in the chain, useful as a detergent builder.

A compound of the formula ##STR1## wherein R' is lower alkyl is useful as an intermediate to prepare a compound of the formula ##STR2## wherein X is selected from the group consisting of: ##STR3## wherein R is selected from the group consisting of alkali metal, NH.sub.4.sup.+, NH(CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 OH).sub.3.sup.+, and lower alkyl, branched or straight chain, with up to about C.sub.20 in the chain. The esters can be converted to salts useful as detergent builders.

A compound of the formula ##STR1## wherein R' is lower alkyl is useful as an intermediate to prepare a compound of the formula ##STR2## wherein X is selected from the group consisting of: ##STR3## wherein R is selected from the group consisting of alkali metal, NH.sub.4.sup.+, NH(CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 OH).sub.3.sup.+, and lower alkyl, branched or straight chain, with up to about C.sub.20 in the chain. The ester can be converted to the corresponding salt, useful as a detergent builder.
