Pressure vessel closure

A pressure vessel formed by either by: a) mating a first end or closure to a second end or closure or b) mating a first end to an intermediate body member and mating the intermediate body member to a second end; the first end comprising a hollowed thin walled dome () having an exterior surface () and an interior surface () and the dome terminating in an edge surface (), the dome () having an axis Y extending through its geometric center of the exterior surface, the dome supporting at least one thin hollow walled projection () having an exterior () and interior surface (), the at least one projection extending outwardly from the dome outer surface (), and terminating in a top surface ().

Pressure vessel

A hybrid airbag inflator () has a disk-shaped pressure vessel having a central axis with a domed upper housing portion () with a sealed exhaust port () for releasing inflation gases and a domed lower body portion () welded to the domed upper housing portion (). The domed lower body portion () has one or more protrusions () extending from an outer or exterior surface positioned offset from the center axis. At least one of the protrusions () houses an igniter assembly () with accessible electrical connections (). The disk-shaped pressure vessel inflator () contains gas generant pellets () and a quantity of pressurized inert gas () for inflating an airbag. The combination of the protrusions () and domed lower body portion () has a unique profile of a petaloid shape. Optionally, the domed upper housing portion () can also have the petaloid shape.

Hybrid airbag inflator

An airbag inflator has a primary igniter and a secondary igniter. The primary igniter ignites an ignition enhancer material, which in turn ignites a primary supply of a gas generant material in a first chamber. A secondary supply of the gas generant material is located in a second chamber that is closed and is not in contact with any ignition enhancer material. Activation of the secondary igniter does not ignite the secondary supply of gas generant material, but does cause the second chamber to be opened. Combustion products from the primary supply of gas generant material enter the chamber and ignite the secondary supply of the gas generant material.
