The invention relates to a high power amplifier waveguide for amplifying an optical signal wherein photo darkening due to high optical flux is reduced considerably. This is achieved by providing a cladding pumped amplifier waveguide wherein the optical mode overlap to the active material of the waveguide is low and/or wherein the active material is distributed over a large cross sectional region of the waveguide.

Cladding-pumped optical waveguide

A new deep blue extended super continuum light source is provided wherein said super continuum at least extends to a low wavelength border &#x3bb;low below 480 nm comprising a pump source which operates at a at least one wavelength &#x3bb;and produces pump pulses of a duration (full width half maximum) longer than 0.1 picoseconds with a repetition rate higher than 1 MHz, and a peak power &#x3bb;, and a micro-structured optical transmission medium having at least one wavelength of zero dispersion &#x3bb;, and for the parameters for said pump source exhibiting a second order dispersion parameter &#x3b2;, and a non-linear parameter &#x3bb; arranged so that the optical transmission medium exhibits a modulation instability gain extending to wavelengths above a wavelength &#x3bb;&#x2267;1300 nm and a phase match between &#x3bb;1and a wavelength &#x3bb;&#x2267;&#x3bb;, wherein the pump is adapted to provide energy within the region of anomalous dispersion of the transmission medium.

Deep blue extended super continuum light source

In a blue extended super continuum light source, when pulses of partly coherent monochromatic 'pump' radiation of essentially constant amplitude are propagating through a microstructure fiber medium within a region of anomalous dispersion of the medium, then, provided the medium has a finite nonlinear coefficient of the index of refraction, the pump pulse is subject to a modulation instability. This results in formation of a train of narrow pulses with Tera Hertz repetition rate. Phase match between red shifted Raman solitons generated by the pump pulse and energy shed by the pump pulse at all frequencies with a group velocity below the pump pulse group velocity may lead to the formation of Cherenkov radiation. The solitons may seed Cherenkov radiation at different wavelengths depending on the actual fiber parameters. This allows extension of generated super continuum light beyond the four wave mixing limit when applying picosecond or nanosecond pump pulses.

Blue extended super continuum light source

An integrated photonic crystal (IPC) structure and method of producing the same in which the IPC structure includes a first layered sub-structure with a surface and a one-dimensional periodic refractive index variation along the direction perpendicular to the surface, and a second sub-structure with a plurality of essentially straight identical passages arranged in a two-dimensional periodic pattern cutting through the layered structure at an angle &#x3b1;. First and second defects in the first and second sub-structures, respectively, enable electromagnetic modes to be localized in the vicinity of the defects and allow photonic crystal waveguide to be constructed that can control and filter light very efficiently and minimize radiation losses.

Integrated photonic crystal structure and method of producing same

An integrated silicon mesa structure integrated in a glass-on-silicon waveguide, and a method of manufacturing it. The silicon mesa waveguide is integrated in a glass-on-silicon waveguide composed of a wave-guiding core between lower and upper sheath layers having a refractive index lower than the index of the wave-guiding core. The silicon mesa structure is preferably made of the silicon substrate, and a low loss silicon mesa waveguide is formed by removing excess material below the mesa structure. Further, transitions between the glass-on-silicon waveguide the the silicon mesa waveguide section are preferably formed such that transmission of light passing the transitions is adiabatic.
