A fluid ejection including a substrate having at least one fluid ejecting element adapted to eject a fluid, a flow feature layer disposed over the substrate, the flow feature layer including a plurality of flow features, a nozzle plate layer disposed over the flow feature layer, the nozzle plate layer including one or more nozzle arrays, each nozzle in each of the one or more nozzle arrays being in fluid communication with a corresponding flow feature of the plurality of flow features and a corresponding fluid ejecting element of the at least one fluid ejecting elements, at least one intake via through which fluid flows into the plurality of flow features, and at least one output via through which fluid flows out of the plurality of flow features.

Ejection device for inkjet printers

A consumable supply item for an imaging device holds an initial or refillable volume of pigmented ink. Its housing defines an interior and exterior. The interior retains the ink and an exit port supplies it to an imaging device. Users orient the housing to deplete the ink in a direction of gravity toward a bottom surface of the interior en route to the exit port. The ink passes through a mixing chamber having inlet ports arranged to restrict to multiple different heights the entrance of the volume of ink from the interior. As ink draws from various heights into the chamber, sediments in the pigment mix together. The design overcomes settling. It also avoids mechanical stirring and other complex mixing techniques. Further embodiments include chamber shapes, configuration of inlet ports, and construction of the supply item, to name a few.

Fluid container having mixing chambers for micro-fluid applications

A method of determining the state of a printhead/cartridge in a thermal inkjet printer. An inkjet printhead undergoes a jetting operation in which a jetting frequency is selected and a corresponding steady state printhead temperature is known. The printhead is heated to the steady state temperature. Then the printhead is jetted with all nozzles for a predetermined period of time. Temperature samples from the printhead are obtained and the change in the printhead temperature for a short period of time is used to determine a slope in the temperature change. From the slope of printhead temperature changes, the ink flow rate through the printhead can be determined. The flow rate of ink through the printhead can be used to determine the various states of the printhead, including out of ink, clogged, deprimed, a taped printhead, etc.

Method for measuring ink flow rate in an inkjet printhead

A method and system for purging bubbles from a fluid chamber of a micro-fluid ejection head containing a plurality of fluid chambers, an ejection actuator respectively associated with each of the fluid chambers, and a common fluid supply area for the fluid chambers. According to this exemplary method, one or more of the ejection actuators are pulsed with energy sufficient to expand a bubble present in one of the fluid chambers without substantially boiling the fluid in the common fluid supply area. A first temperature of the ejection head is maintained for a first period of time during bubble expansion so that the bubble in the fluid chamber is urged away from the fluid chamber. The ejection head temperature is decreased over a second period of time to lower the ejection head temperature to a second temperature lower then the first temperature.

Bubble purging system and method

Some embodiments of the present invention provide an inkjet printhead within which a removable ink cartridge can be installed. Upon installation, the ink cartridge can be coupled to one or more wicks in the printhead for establishing fluid communication between one or more chambers in the ink cartridge and nozzles through which ink exits the printhead during operation. The wick can extend from a cartridge receptacle to a substantially enclosed ink reservoir in order to transport ink from the removable cartridge to the ink reservoir.

Bridging wick and method for an inkjet printhead

A multi-fluid body and an ejection head substrate connected in fluid flow communication with the multi-fluid body for ejecting multiple fluids therefrom. The multi-fluid body includes at least two segregated fluid chambers. Independent fluid supply paths lead from each of the fluid chambers providing fluid to multiple fluid flow paths in the ejection head substrate. The ejection head substrate is attached adjacent an ejection head area of the body. The fluid flow paths in the ejection head substrate have a flow path density of greater than about one flow paths per millimeter.

A printhead for an inkjet printer includes an ink reservoir and a plurality of nozzles for ejecting ink from the ink reservoir onto print media, the nozzles being formed in the ink jet printer printhead in a predetermined fashion with bores purposefully shaped and directed to determine the formation and placement of main drops and/or satellite droplets when ink is ejected from the ink reservoir when the printhead is part of an inkjet printer.

An ink jet printhead assembly includes a heater chip having a backside with at least one cavity. A substrate is associated with the backside of the heater chip. Adhesive is at least partially disposed within the at least one cavity. The adhesive adheres the backside of the heater chip to the substrate.

A method of optimizing a relationship between fire energy and drop velocity associated with a printhead is provided. A test pattern is printed by selectively supplying energy distribution signals to a plurality of actuators of the printhead. The energy distribution signals have distinct energy profiles. The test pattern is scanned to obtain drop velocity information corresponding to the energy distribution signals. Based on the drop velocity information, an energy profile is determined that optimizes the relationship between fire energy and drop velocity.

Method and apparatus for optimizing a relationship between fire energy and drop velocity in an imaging device

The invention provides a method for forming ink jet nozzle structures in an ablatable material. More particularly, the invention provides uniform nozzle structure by ablating an ablatable material with a laser beam while setting a field lens unit to various locations relative to a projection lens. The resulting ink jet nozzle structures have substantially orthogonal ink delivery trajectory paths relative to a plane defined by the length and width of the ablatable material regardless of the nozzles hole position relative to the edges of the ablatable material.

Laser ablation method for uniform nozzle structure

A thermal ink jet printing apparatus maintains stable printing output as certain characteristics of the apparatus change over its operational lifetime. The apparatus includes an ink jet print head with resistive heating elements for receiving electrical energy pulses having a voltage level and for transferring heat energy pulses having a desired energy level into adjacent ink based on the electrical energy pulses. The print head includes nozzles associated with the resistive heating elements through which droplets of the ink are ejected when the heat energy pulses are transferred into the ink. The apparatus further includes a printer controller in electrical communication with the print head. The printer controller determines a pulse count indicative of a number of electrical energy pulses, applies the electrical energy pulses having a first pulse width to the resistive heating elements when the pulse count is less than a threshold value, and applies the electrical energy pulses having an adjusted pulse width to the resistive heating elements when the pulse count exceeds the threshold value. The difference in the first and the adjusted pulse widths compensates for changes in the electrical resistance of the resistive heating elements over time.

Long-life stable-jetting thermal ink jet printer

A method of forming one or more nozzles in a substrate used, for example, as a nozzle plate in an inkjet printhead of a thermal inkjet printer, using laser ablation, An opaque mask is interposed between a source of a laser beam and the substrate and includes one or more transparent, ring-shaped orifices therethrough arranged in a closely-spaced matrix. The beam is emitted from the laser source towards the mask such that the opaque portions of the mask block the beam from passing through the mask except for through the ring-shaped orifices. The beam is thereby separated into one or more ring-shaped beam portions, each of which penetrates the substrate at approximately the same and substantially constant intensity to ablate one or more ring-shaped openings in the substrate arranged on the substrate as a closely-spaced matrix. Ring-spaced openings each defines a center plug portion, which is removed from the substrate, for example, by vacuum or adhesive.

Method of forming an inkjet printhead nozzle structure

The invention provides a flow feature structure for an ink jet printer. The structure includes a polymeric nozzle plate having a nozzle plate thickness, the nozzle plate containing a plurality of ink chambers, each ink chamber containing a nozzle hole in fluid communication therewith, a plurality of ink channels each having a channel width and an ink channel inlet for providing ink flow from an ink supply region to one each of the ink chambers and an air bubble interrupter device having a width dimension perpendicular to a flow axis through the ink channel. The width dimension of the air bubble interrupter is from about 0.5 to about 1.2 times the ink channel width and the interrupter device is disposed adjacent each of the ink channels and spaced from the ink channel inlet a distance of from about 0.5 to about 1.2 times the ink channel width. Such a structure provides improvement in ink flow by reducing the size of air bubbles which may form or accumulate in the flow areas of the nozzle plate so that the air bubbles do not block or inhibit the flow of ink to the ink chambers or affect the ejection of ink from the nozzle holes.

A method of printing with an ink jet printer compensates for skewed printing on a print medium An image area is defined on the print medium that has a plurality of rows of pixel locations and a plurality of columns of pixel locations. A printhead includes a plurality of vertically adjacent ink emitting orifices arranged in an array having a height. The printhead is scanned during first and second scans across the print medium in a direction transverse to the advance direction. The ink is jetted onto the print medium from the ink emitting orifices during the first and second scans at selected ink dot placement locations generally corresponding to one of the columns of pixel locations An offset is determined in a transverse direction between a bottom ink dot placement location associated with the first scan and a top ink dot placement location associated with the second scan. The ink dot placement locations associated with each swath is shifted by a predetermined amount to properly align the top dots of that swath with the bottom dots of the previously printed swath.
