Disclosed herein are metal oxides, metal oxide surfaces, and methods of using metal oxides and metal oxide surfaces for matrix-free analysis, identification, and characterization of small molecular mass compounds. The disclosed compounds and methods may be used with laser desorption/ionization-mass spectrometry. The disclosed surfaces may aid in producing mass/charge spectra having low or no interference found with traditional matrices. In some aspects, the method may be used to produce molecular ions. The disclosed compounds, surfaces, and methods may be used to analyze complex mixtures including fuels, vegetable shortening, lipid extracts from a variety of organic sources such as animals, plants, bacteria, algae, viruses, etc.

Methods and apparatus are provided for detection of microorganisms in a sample. Methods and apparatus of the invention are based on the specificity that phage, for example bacteriophage, have for target microorganisms, for example bacterium. Typically, phage adsorption to target microorganisms act as signal, or a signal target, for the presence of the target microorganism. Typically, the phage are labeled with a detectable signal. Apparatus of the invention are directed toward concentrating the phage adsorbed microorganisms at a predetermined site for flag dependent observation.

Apparatus and method for detecting microscopic organisms using bacteriophage

The invention is directed to a method for detecting low concentrations of bacteria in liquid solution that may or may not be complex liquid solutions. In one embodiment, immunomagnetic separation (IMS) is used to separate target bacterium that may be in a liquid mixture from other constituents in the mixture. A low concentration of a bacteriophage for the target bacteria is subsequently used to infect target bacterial cells that have been captured using the IMS technique. If at least a certain concentration of target bacterium are present, the bacteriophage will multiply to a point that is detectable. Matrix assisted laser desorption ionization/time-of-flight-mass spectrometry (MALDI/TOF-MS) is then used to produce a mass spectrum that is analyzed to determine if one or more proteins associated with the bacteriophage are present, thereby indirectly indicating that target bacterium were present in the liquid mixture.

The present invention relates to a method for the detection of biological agents and, in particular, biological agents that may present a health hazard. In one embodiment, the invention identifies the unidentified biological agent, assesses the reliability of the identification, and if determined to be reliable, outputs the identification. Initially, data that relates to the biological composition of an unidentified biological agent is received. The data is then analyzed with a machine learning procedure to identify the unidentified biological agent in the sample. The reliability of the identification is then assessed with, for example, an analysis of MS/MS data on the unidentified biological agent. If the identification is found to be reliable, the identification is output.

Method for detection of biological related materials using biomarkers

The present invention relates to the detection of the likely presence of a virus in the environment. The detection is accomplished in a relatively rapid fashion that permits countermeasures to be taken to reduce the debilitating or deadly effects of the virus upon the target population. In one embodiment, the detection is accomplished by looking for the mass spectral signature or biomarker for a lipid, which is present in the cell cultures used to produce the virus. One biomarker that is considered particularly diagnostic for the presence of a virus is cholesterol.

Provided is a method for processing measured property data, such as property data that would be generated from measurement of a property of soil gas samples collected in a geochemical survey. Property data for individual components is processed to identify whether one or more of the components corresponds to a known contaminant material. When a portion of the property data is identified as corresponding to a contaminant material, then that portion of the property data is eliminated, and remaining property data is combined to form a composite for analysis purposes. Results of the analysis may be used to determine the location for drilling exploration or test wells to test for the presence of a targeted subterranean accumulation, such as of petroleum, natural gas, coal or an environmental pollutant.

Method and apparatus for processing geochemical survey data

An apparatus and method for the electrodeposition of microorganisms on an electrode using a weak, direct current voltage. The electrodeposition of the microorganisms occurs within a relatively short period of time thereby reducing the requirement for culturing the microorganisms. The electrode can be used as an electrode for a Curie point pyrolysis mass spectrometer to determine the specific microorganism electrodeposited on the electrode.

Apparatus and method for concentrating microorganisms from a liquid

An apparatus and method for detecting and mapping volatile species emanating from an underground source. A mass spectrometer is used for species identification and multivariate statistics are employed to determine the character of the source. The character is quantitatively defined and the volatile species emanating from unknown areas is compared to a known source.
