A method of manufacturing a color filter, includes forming a colored coated film on a substrate using a colored composition containing a pigment, a monomer having an ethylenic unsaturated double bond and photo-polymerization initiator, irradiating a filter segment-forming region or a black matrix-forming region of the colored coated film with an excimer laser beam having a wavelength of 308 nm (XeCL) at a dosage sufficient to achieve a cumulative light exposure of 1-150 mJ/cm, thereby curing the irradiated region, removing uncured portions of the colored coated film to form the filter segment or the black matrix, and repeating the above-described steps plural times, thereby forming filter segments of at least two colors and/or a black matrix.

Colored composition, color filter and manufacturing method thereof

A color filter includes red, green and blue filter segments and is adapted to be used in a liquid crystal display device using, as a light source, a white LED having specified spectral properties. The red filter segment has a 50% transmittance wavelength within a range of 595 to 610 nm and a transmittance of 85% or more at a wavelength of 630 nm. The blue filter segment has a maximum transmittance wavelength of 455 nm or less and a transmittance of 55% or more at a wavelength of 450 nm. A thickness of each of the red, green and blue filter segments is 3.0 &#x3bc;m or less. A liquid crystal display device including this color filter and the white LED is also disclosed.

A blue colored composition for a color filter contains a pigment carrier comprising a transparent resin, a precursor thereof or a mixture thereof, a blue pigment having a specific surface area of 90 to 140 m/g, and a violet pigment having a specific surface area in a range of 100 to 150 m/g, but having a greater specific surface area than that of the blue pigment used. A color filter includes a filter segment formed from the blue colored composition.
