The present invention relates to coated cutting tool inserts particularly useful for heavy roughing turning operations of very large steel components, such as drive shafts for ships and shafts for wind power plants. The inserts are large with an iC, inscribed circle diameter, of greater than or equal to about 19 mm and a thickness of greater than or equal to about 6 mm with a composition of from about 5 to about 10 wt-% Co, from about 5 to about 12 wt-% cubic carbides or carbonitrides of the metals Ti, Ta and/or Nb, and balance WC with a stratified binder phase enriched surface zone from about 15 to about 40 &#x3bc;m thick. The inserts have an edge rounding before coating of 35-95 &#x3bc;m. Coated cemented carbide insert particularly useful for heavy duty operations

A cutting tool insert has a cermet body with a Co and/or Ni binder phase and a coating deposited as monolayer or as multiple and/or alternating layers of carbide, nitride or oxide. The coating has a thickness of 21-50 &#x3bc;m, when the inserts have a flat rake face, without or with simple chipbreakers and a Co binder phase, or has a thickness of 10-50 &#x3bc;m, when the inserts have a rake face land with a width of 100-300 &#x3bc;m with an angle of 10-25&#xb0; to the rake face and a Co and/or Ni binder phase. The cermet body has more than 50 vol. % Ti-based carbonitride and less than 15 wt % and more than 6 wt % Co and/or Ni binder phase and a hardness of &#x3e;1650 HV3. The disclosure also relates to the use of the coated cutting tool insert for the machining of cast iron work pieces.

Coated cermet cutting tool and use thereof

The present invention relates to a method of machining a metal work piece with a coated cutting tool insert having a cemented carbide body and a coating deposited as monolayer(s) or as multiple and/or alternating layers. The coating has a total thickness of from about 25 to about 75 &#x3bc;m and the machining is performed at a cutting speed of greater than about 600 m/min, preferably from about 800 to about 1500 m/min. The invention also relates to a coated cutting tool useful for such machining operation.

Method for high speed machining and coated cutting tool

There is disclosed a coated cutting insert particularly useful for cutting in cast iron materials. The insert is characterized by a straight WC-Co cemented carbide body having a highly W-alloyed Co binder phase, a well-defined surface content of Co and a coating including an innermost layer of TiCNOwith columnar grains, a layer of a fine-grained, textured AlOlayer and a top layer of TiCNOthat has been removed along the cutting edge line.

Coated cutting insert

There is disclosed a coated cutting insert particularly useful for cutting in cast iron materials. The insert is characterized by a straight WC-Co cemented carbide body having a highly W-alloyed Co binder phase, a well-defined surface content of Co and a coating including an innermost layer of TiC.sub.x N.sub.y O.sub.z with columnar grains, a layer of a fine-grained, textured Al.sub.2 O.sub.3 layer and a top layer of TiC.sub.x N.sub.y O.sub.z that has been removed along the cutting edge line.

A cutting insert of a sintered carbonitride alloy and with a complicated geometry, the insert having improved efficiency. This is obtained by giving the powder non-uniform compaction during pressing of the powder into a press-body so that the ultimate working edges will have a higher relative density than the surrounding, more 'supporting' material in the press-body. By these means are often obtained surface defects in the form of cracks because of dissolved strains during the sintering.
