The Mobile Subscriber Station paging system makes use of a Standalone Home Location Register SHLR, where the mobile subscriber station records are removed from the present Mobile Switching Center and placed on a processor that manages only the subscriber's records and does not process call service requests. The ANSI-41 standard is then adapted to add a new parameter (CALLTIMEFEATURE) which includes the information required to apply Short MIN paging to a mobile subscriber station when certain conditions are met. These conditions are: the mobile subscriber station is capable of responding to a Short MIN page (the last 24 bits that represent the last 7 digits of the mobile subscriber station number), and the System ID that is immutably entered into the mobile subscriber station is the same as the System ID that is being broadcast by the cell on the overhead message train. When these conditions are met, the paging message can be reduced in length by using a sub-address paging scheme to thereby diminish the control channel overhead.

In the method, the receipt or lack thereof of a number select code from a mobile station forms the basis for selecting a calling number from multiple calling numbers associated with the mobile station. The number select code may directly or indirectly identify a calling number.

A mobile telecommunications system includes within a serving system database entries that associate the identifier of a mobile unit, which could be a cellular telephone or a personal communications service (PCS) device, with a plurality of directory numbers. The mobile unit identifier may be a mobile identification number (MIN) or international mobile service identifier (IMSI), for example. The system may store this association within a home location register (HLR), within a mobile switching center (MSC), or in both. In the process of terminating a telephone call the system employs supplemental information to determine which of the plurality of directory numbers associated with the mobile unit's mobile identifier is to be employed for the purposes of the telephone call being terminated. The supplemental information may be the current location of the mobile unit, for example.

A system for expanding a parameter encoding field in a new communications protocol that is compatible with an old protocol. An unused command parameter in an old protocol is used to indicate an expanded parameter encoding field in a new protocol. Parameter encodings from the old protocol are unchanged in the new protocol. A system communicating using the old protocol recognizes all parameters from the old protocol and ignores parameters from the new protocol. A system communicating using the new protocol recognizes parameters from both the old and new protocols.

A method of establishing a telecommunications call connection in a cellular wireless system. If a mobile station is near the border between areas served by two mobile switching center (MSCs) then the mobile is paged from appropriate base stations of one of the MSCs while the other MSC is alerted to listen for page responses from the paged mobile station. Advantageously, the number of paging orders is substantially reduced thus increasing the call handling capacity of the base station systems. The second MSC is initialized to be prepared to process a page response from the mobile station being paged from the base stations of the first MSC. Advantageously, this permits straightforward recognition of a valid paging response and a record of the call with which that response is associated.

A method and apparatus for controlling a cellular mobile telecommunication system. A switch and a telecommunication control complex cooperate to set up connection between a telecommunication network, such as the common carrier public telephone network, and a plurality of mobile units. The switch sets up connections between trunks to the telephone network and communication links connected to the cell sites of the mobile telecommunication system. The telecommunication control complex, including a mobile telecommunication controller and the cell site controllers, controls the radio connections between these communication links and the mobile units.
