A graphene-based ion sensitive field effect transistor (GISFET) with high sensitivity and selectivity for ions is provided. For example, the GISFET of the present invention can exhibit high sensitivity and selectivity for Kions has been demonstrated utilizing a valinomycin-based ion selective membrane. The sensitivity of the GISFET can be at least about 50 millivolts/decade and can be stable for a time period of about two months, indicating the GISFET's reliability and effectiveness for physiological monitoring.

Graphene field effect transistors for detection of ions

In certain embodiments of the present disclosure, a method for determining an inhibitor of acetylcholine-activated potassium channel is described. The method includes incubating a cardiac cell in a solution comprising a test compound. The method further includes adding a muscarine (M2) receptor agonist to the cardiac cell in the solution and monitoring the cardiac cell for a change in membrane potential. A statistically insignificant change in the membrane potential following addition of the muscarine (M2) receptor to the solution signifies that the test compound is a Kchannel blocker that inhibits opening of the acetylcholine-activated potassium channel.
