Prostheses that address stress shielding are disclosed. For instance, a knee prosthesis includes a monolithic femoral component having medial and lateral condylar elements for confronting and engaging a natural tibia or a bearing member of a tibial component, an intercondylar notch between the condylar elements for confronting and engaging a natural patella or a patellar component, and an anterior flange extending proximally from the medial and lateral condylar elements and the intercondylar notch. The femoral component defines a bone-facing surface and a bearing surface, the bearing surface including medial and lateral condylar articular surfaces defined by the medial and lateral condylar elements, respectively, and an intercondylar articular surface defined by the intercondylar notch. A slot extends through the femoral component from the bearing surface to the bone-facing surface, the slot starting at an edge of the femoral component and ending at a location within the anterior flange. Methods of making and using the prosthesis are also provided.

A tibial implant comprising: a baseplate having a bone contacting surface, a bearing support surface and a proximally extending wall at least partially surrounding the bearing support surface; a bearing component slidably mounted with respect to the baseplate bearing support surface, the bearing component having a proximally facing condylar surface and a distally facing surface for contacting the baseplate bearing support surface the proximally and distally facing bearing component surfaces spaced to define a circumferential side surface therebetween; and an elastic gasket element interposed within a gap formed between the baseplate proximally extending wall and the bearing component circumferential side surface.

Limited motion tibial bearing

IM revision tools include a cutting guide having a coupling (preferably a male dovetail coupling), and a plurality of valgus adapters each having a mating (for example, female dovetail) coupling. According to a preferred embodiment of the invention, ten valgus adapters are provided: left and right with offsets of 0 mm, 2 mm, 4 mm, 6 mm, and 8 mm. All but the 0 mm valgus adapters are provided with dual rotational joints which allow a cutting guide to be positioned in both the anterior-posterior direction as well as in the medial-lateral direction. All but the 0 mm valgus adapters are provided with a reverse clock face below the female dovetail coupling. The methods include selecting the appropriate valgus adapter, attaching the valgus adapter to an IM stem and to the cutting guide, and inserting the IM stem into the femoral canal. If 0 mm offset adapter is not chosen, the cutting guide can be orbited 360&deg; to position the cutting guide correctly. When the cutting guide is in position the degree of rotation can be determined by reading the reverse clock face on the valgus adapter. The reverse clock face reading can then be used to adjust the offset of the implant by setting the implant offset to the same setting.
