A document processing system for processing documents having data printed thereon including markings visible to the eye, but which are not to be read by the system and characters which are to be read by the system includes structure for scanning a document for capturing the color image of the document being processed and for generating a plurality of colored picture elements. Circuity is provided for identifying colors included within the core area and edge of the markings. The colors of the picture elements of the core area and edge of the markings are converted to the color of the background of the document thereby generating a filtered image of the document. An optical character recognition unit is provided for receiving the filtered image of the document representing character information only and for identifying the characters appearing on the document from the filtered image, such that the markings and the background surrounding a character are not distinguishable by the optical character recognition unit.

Document processing system and method

A page image display system (10) is provided for converting high resolution digitized raster scan data of an image to a lower resolution for display on a cathode ray tube display (38) is provided. The system (10) includes circuitry (26, 28, 32) for extracting a selected group of black/white picture elements from the raster scan data. The selected group of picture elements is applied to a lookup table (34) for converting the black/white picture elements to a single gray level picture element for display on the cathode ray tube display (38).

High resolution page image display system

A document processing system for processing documents having data printed thereon including pre-printed markings visible to the eye and machine-readable characters includes a scanner for capturing the color image of the document being processed. Circuitry is provided for reducing the contract between the pre-printed marking and the background surrounding a machine-readable character based upon the hue of the pre-printed markings, such that the pre-printed markings and the background surrounding a character are not distinguishable with respect to light reflected from the document thereby generating a filtered image of the document. An optical character recognition device receives the filtered image of the document representing character information only for identifying the characters appearing on the document.

A system (14) for locating possible address information contained in a window area of a mail item (40) is provided. System (14) includes a source of illumination (60) and detectors (62) for sensing the reflectivity of the mail item (40). Circuitry (34) is provided for measuring the reflectivity from the mail item (40). Circuitry (36) is provided for determining the presence of a window on the mail item (40) and the coordinates of the detected window. Circuitry (26) is provided for selecting address information contained within a window located by the window detect circuitry (36).

Disclosed is a drop modulator based phase error sensing circuit for use in drop-charge phase control circuitry in ink jet printers. A phase control is required to maintain the correct relationship between drop break off time and the drop charging signal. The circuit described provides solutions to the problem encountered in drop modulator based sensing.

A liquid drop emitter utilizing acoustical principles ejects liquid from a body of liquid onto a moving document to form characters or bar codes thereon.

A hemicylindrical crystal is used in a variable frequency multi-orifice ink jet modulator. Unwanted resonant frequencies are damped providing the capability of wide band operation. A phase control is used with the modulator to control printing operations.

Variable frequency multi-orifice IJP

A modulator for ink jet printers is provided for operation over a wide bandwidth of high frequency drop rates. The longitudinal dimensions of each part of the modulator are made small compared to the wavelength of the shortest standing longitudinal acoustic wave that may be produced in a structure of the same material as the part in question. A piezoelectric crystal is seated within a mount acoustically decoupled at the edges therof. An electrode is axially aligned with the crystal and placed in contact with the crystal. A short hollow cylinder forms an ink chamber axially aligned with the crystal. The end of the ink chamber opposite the crystal is closed by a front plate having a nozzle axially located therein. Plural nozzles may be utilized to produce parallel ink streams which break into droplets at substantially the same time and at a near uniform distance from the nozzles.
