A paper sizing composition, comprising at least one first sizing component dispersed in water, the said sizing component being prepared of a reaction product of a maleic anhydride and a fatty acid component, and an aluminium component. The fatty acid component comprises an alkyl ester of one or more fatty acids selected from a vegetable oil based fatty acid mixture. The particle size of the particles in said first sizing component has been reduced so that in the dispersion at least 50% of the particles are &#x3c;2.5 &#x3bc;m, at least 75% of the particles are &#x3c;4 &#x3bc;m and at least 90% of the particles are &#x3c;5 &#x3bc;m, preferably so that at least 50% of the particles are &#x3c;2 &#x3bc;m, at least 75% of the particles are &#x3c;3 &#x3bc;m and at least 90% of the particles are &#x3c;4 &#x3bc;m.

Product for use in papermaking and preparation thereof

The invention relates to the sizing of paper and board using alkenyl succinic anhydride (ASA). The invention provides a sizing composition which comprises an aqueous emulsion of an ASA wherein the ASA incorporates a maximum of 1% by weight (preferably a maximum of 0.5% by weight) of polymeric residues. The composition may incorporate less than 0.5% by weight of olefins. Paper sizing compositions in accordance with the invention provide enhanced resistance to penetration of the edges of paper and board by agents such as hot hydrogen peroxide and lactic acid.

A composition for surface treatment of paper which includes a nanoparticle fraction, and a carrier fraction for detaining the nanoparticles in the surface layer. The carrier fraction includes plate-like pigment particles, and at least one binder. The invention also relates to the method of manufacturing the composition and to its use.

The main part of the hydrocarbon chains R' and R&#x2033; of the oxetanon derivative or 2-oxetanon are derived from linear fatty acids, and &#x2266;20 w-%, typically 2 to 15 w-%, most typically 5 to 12 w-% of the hydrocarbon chains are derived from branched and mainly saturated fatty acids.

A modified filler used in the making of paper or the like, preparation of the filler and its use. The modified filler comprises a filler known as such, e.g. Calcium carbonate, kaolin, talc, titanium dioxide, sodium silicate and aluminum trihydrate or their mixture, and a hydrophobic polymer made of polymerisable monomers, which is added to the filler as a polymer dispersion or a polymer solution.
