A phosphor screen for a cathode ray tube employing an interference filter for projection television is produced by temporarily sealing the face panel and funnel of the tube toegether, forming the screen by a settling technique, and then separating the screened panel and funnel to allow access to the panel for further processing prior to permanently sealing the panel and funnel together.

The invention provides discrete means for temporarily covering a substantially annular U-shaped effusive material container for use in a cathode ray tube. The annular covering member is likewise substantially U-shaped and, being of smaller dimensioning, is telescopically fitted within the container to cover the effusive material disposed therein. The inner and outer walls of the channeled cover are contiguous with the respective walls of the container to form the two concentric laminated composite walls of the assembly. The laminated components comprising each wall are joined in an interlocking manner by a substantially continuous annular deformation of the respective composite wall structure thereby effecting positive securement of the cover to the container.

The invention provides a sealed effusive material structure for angular orientation within a cathode ray tube. The effusive material, which is disposed in an annular channelized container, is protectively sealed by a metallic covering that melts at a temperature above that encountered during panel-funnel sealing, and below that used for activation of the effusive material. Receptacle means integral with the container is provided to collect and retain the gravity flow of the melted covering material.

In one aspect of the invention a process for affixing a self-supporting film of emissive materials in a binder to a cathode support member to provide a cathode for a cathode ray tube includes the steps of depositing at least one drop of a liquid mixture containing a solvent for the binder of the film onto a cathode support member, contacting the liquid mixture with the self-supporting film, and preferentially evaporating the liquid mixture to cause the binder of the film to affix the film to the cathode support member. In another aspect of the invention, an improved liquid mixture for affixing a self-supporting film of emissive materials in a binder to a cathode support member includes at least two liquids miscible in all proportions with one liquid essentially a non-solvent and another higher boiling liquid a solvent for the binder of the film.

A process for increasing the wetting capabilities of phosphors employed in color cathode ray tubes includes coating the phosphors with a wetting agent which is organic, substantially non-ionic, water or alcohol soluble at 20.degree. C. to 25.degree. C., non-reactive with dichromate sensitized polyvinyl alcohol within the temperature range of about 20.degree. C. to 480.degree. C. and vaporizable at a temperature above about 60.degree. C. and below 480.degree. C. Use of the process reduces agglomeration of phosphor particles when used in dry phosphor screening techniques.

An internal resistive coating for a cathode ray tube is derived from a suspension which includes electrically conductive particles, electrically insulative particles, silicate solids and a wetting agent of the anionic class. The internal resistive coating is made by mixing the insulative particles, a silicate solution and water, milling the mixture, adding electrically conductive particles to the mixture, milling the electrically conductive particles and mixture to provide a suspension, preparing a stock solution of wetting agent of the anionic class, and stirring the wetting agent stock solution into the suspension to provide a wall dispersed resistive coating suspension.

Improvement is provided in a color cathode ray tube of the post-deflection acceleration type, in the form of an operational system including related tube geometry. An electron barrier, consisting of a metallic film having a defined voltage penetration threshold, is adheringly disposed on the surface of the screen. The potential on the screen is in the order of substantially 20 to 40 kilovolts while the potential of the related color-selection electrode is more than substantially 72 percent and less than 85 percent of the screen potential thereby effecting a definitive voltage differential (.DELTA.V) therebetween that is substantially equal to or less than the voltage penetration threshold of the metallic film. The improvement in the system provides enhanced contrast and color purity in the screen display and minimizes background luminescence of the screen resultant from spurious impingement of secondary electrons generated in the tube.
