A notification appliance is disclosed. The notification appliance may be a strobe notification appliance, such as an LED strobe notification appliance. The notification appliance may be wall-mounted or ceiling-mounted. Further, the notification appliance may include an optic that is configured to shape the light output from the notification appliance. For example, in a wall-mount, the optic may be mounted off-axis of a plane defined by a back plate of the notification appliance. Further, the notification appliance may be composed of a back plate, a driver board, and a front housing, with the front housing being attached to one or both of the back plate and the driver board. Moreover, the notification appliance may be used with an adapter bracket, which may be used to connect the notification appliance with one or more types of junction boxes.

A strobe notification appliance and an emergency lighting appliance that output directional information are disclosed. The strobe notification appliance may generate, in addition to notification of the fire condition, directional information (e.g., such as away from the unavailable exit paths and/or toward the preferred exit paths). For example, the strobe notification appliance includes a strobe element outputting fire notification information and a directional light element outputting directional information. The emergency lighting appliance may also operate in different modes, such as a power failure mode in which the emergency lighting appliance outputs light responsive to a power failure, and an alert mode (e.g., fire alert or mass notification alert mode) in which the emergency lighting appliance outputs light to convey directional information in order to guide occupants of a building. In this way, the occupants may be notified of an alarm event and notified of available or unavailable exit paths.

A strobe notification device that operates based on a sensed environmental condition is disclosed. The strobe notification device includes a programmed candela setting, programmed locally at the strobe notification device or programmed remotely and sent to the strobe notification device. Based on the sensed environmental condition, one or more aspects of the operation of the strobe notification device may be modified to operate the strobe of the strobe notification device at least at the programmed candela settings. For example, the intensity, duration of the pulse, or pulse width modulation of the strobe may be modified, based on the sensed environmental condition, to produce a candela output greater than the programmed candela setting. As another example, the intensity, duration of the pulse, or pulse width modulation of the strobe may be modified, based on the sensed environmental condition, to produce a candela output that is equal to the programmed candela setting.

Conditionally variable strobe notification appliance

A strobe device that operates in multiple modes is disclosed. The strobe device may include an LED-based strobe element and a controller. In response to receiving a command to generate an output, the controller determines in which of at least a first mode and second mode to operate, and sends one or more signals to the LED-based strobe element based on the determination. The first mode and the second mode may differ from one another in at least one aspect, such as duration, luminosity, current supplied to LED, or wavelength range. The controller may select both of the first mode and the second mode (such as alternating between the first mode and the second mode). Or, the controller may select one of the first mode and the second mode. For example, depending on the ambient light at or near the strobe device, the controller may select either the first mode or the second mode.

A current regulating LED strobe drive circuit including an energy storage component, a current regulator electrically coupled to the energy storage component for sensing and regulating a current supplied by the energy storage element, a LED electrically coupled to the current regulator, a flash control element electrically coupled to the current regulator for generating a flash pulse signal that dictates a pulsed pattern with which current is allowed to flow from the current regulator to the LED, an output control having an operator interface for allowing an operator to select a desired light output level, wherein the output control is electrically coupled to the current regulator for varying the amount of current supplied to the LED, and an inrush control including a plurality of slow charge circuits, wherein each slow charge circuit is configured to provide a respective peak current for charging the energy storage component.

A method and system for determining at least one property of a strobe cover are disclosed. The determined property of the strobe cover may then be analyzed to determine whether it is the proper property for the strobe device. The property of the strobe cover may include the color of the strobe cover (such as clear, blue, amber, etc.), the shape of the strobe cover (such as a strobe cover with a lens or a strobe cover without a lens), the material of the strobe cover, etc. The method and system may include determining the property of the strobe cover and checking whether the determined property is the expected property of the strobe cover (such as the expected color of the strobe cover). The strobe cover may include one or more property indicators. The one or more property indicators may interface with a circuit, such as mechanically interface with the circuit, in order for the circuit to determine the property of the strobe cover.

An LED strobe notification device and method for operating an LED strobe notification device is provided. The LED strobe notification device is configured to generate an output at two or more candela settings and is configured to generate the output at the two or more candela settings having a human-perceived pulse duration with a fixed width. The LED strobe device includes: an LED strobe element; and an LED controller in communication with the LED strobe element with the LED controller configured to: receive a candela selection for the LED strobe element, the candela selection selected from the two or more candela settings; receive a command to activate the LED strobe element of the LED strobe notification device; and in response to receiving the command, control the LED strobe element in order to generate the output from the LED strobe element having the human-perceived pulse duration with the fixed width.

A strobe device that includes multiple strobe elements is disclosed. The strobe device may include a first strobe element and a second strobe element, where at least one aspect of the first strobe element differs from the second strobe element. For example, the first strobe element may be a Xenon flash tube strobe element and the second strobe element may be an LED-based strobe element. In response to receiving a command to generate an output, the controller determines which of the first strobe element and/or the second strobe element to activate, and sends one or more signals to the first strobe element and/or the second strobe element based on the determination. The controller may activate both of the first strobe element and the second strobe element (such as alternating activation of the first strobe element and the second strobe element). Or, the controller may select one of the first strobe element and the second strobe element. For example, depending on the ambient light at or near the strobe device, the controller may activate either the first strobe element or the second strobe element.
