A process for making an ultra high solids emulsion adhesive that is coatable and dryable at room temperature. The process consists of increasing solids using a phase inversion process to accomplish the addition of increased solids into aqueous formulations thereby obtaining emulsion pressure sensitive adhesives with solids content in excess of 60%.

Ultra-high solids emulsion pressure sensitive adhesives and their applications

A photo album is provided having an ink-receptive coating on a surface of the photo album. A user may write text or draw pictures on the surface with an ink pen, such as with a gel-based ink pen. The ink-receptive coating protects the ink from smudging or smearing after the ink has dried. Consequently, the text and/or picture is durable. The writable or drawable surface may be the front or back exterior surface, and/or an interior surface.

Drawable and writable photo album

A method for making hydrophilic homopolymers and copolymers of poly 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate. Also disclosed are coatings, films, hydrogels, cosmetic compositions, dermatological compositions, pressure sensitive adhesives containing the hydrophilic homopolymers or copolymers of poly 2-hydroxyethylmethacrylate. Further disclosed are methods of coating substrates with the hydrophilic homopolymers and copolymers of poly 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate and hydrophilic pressure sensitive adhesives.

Polymer powders, pressure sensitive adhesives and methods of making the same

A method for the preparation of gel-free poly 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate substantially in the absence of a chain transfer agent, comprising introducing monomeric 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate containing ethylene glycol dimethacrylate impurities in the range of about 0.05 to 0.1% by weight into alcohol, polymerizing the 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate to form a polymerization mixture, and removing the alcohol. Hydrophilic pressure sensitive adhesives are provided by adding polyethylene glycol to the polymerization mixture prior to removing the alcohol. A method for the preparation of an acrylic emulsion ink jet receptive clear coating, comprising forming a alkyl acrylate monomer-containing pre-emulsion feed mixture, introducing an activator into the alkyl acrylate monomer-containing pre-emulsion feed mixture, reacting a water soluble monomer feed in the alkyl acrylate monomer-containing pre-emulsion feed mixture, the water soluble monomer feed comprising 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate and a cationic monomer to form a clear polymer in the reaction mixture. In another embodiment, the clear polymer in the butyl acrylate-containing pre-emulsion feed mixture is subsequently reacted with a water insoluble monomer feed mixture comprising 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate, n-vinyl pyrrolidone, butyl acrylate, and methacrylic acid to form a second clear polymer in addition to the clear polymer in the alkyl acrylate monomer containing pre-emulsion feed mixture.

Hydrophilic polymers, pressure sensitive adhesives and coatings

Coatable ink-receptive compositions and coated substrates are provided. The compositions contain a pigment dispersed in a binder composed of an ethylene vinyl acetate emulsion polymer and at least one water soluble, cationic polymer, such as polydiallyldimethylammonium chloride and copolymers of a quaternary amino acrylate or methacrylate and a hydroxy-lower alkyl acrylate or methacrylate. Papers, films, labels and similar products, coated with an ink-receptive composition, are also provided.

Ink-receptive compositions and coated products

Heat shrinkable labels formed of a polyolefin such as polypropylene have a permanent acrylic pressure sensitive adhesive on one surface thereof, and may be mounted on a release coated backing strip. A metallization layer and open style graphics may be applied to the labels, and the graphics may be protected by varnish or a second layer of heat shrinkable polyolefin material. The label has low shrink-back properties under high ambient temperature storage conditions, following application to a product, of less than three percent.

Stable pressure sensitive shrink label technique

A pressure-sensitive adhesive is formed from a high-molecular-weight polymer and is plasticized by a low-molecular-weight polymer, which polymers have monomer contents which differ by no more than 30 percent by weight.

Pressure-sensitive adhesives based on similar polymers

A label assembly includes concealed promotional material, and is secured to the product package with the assembly including water-soluble adhesive. The promotional material may be in the form of a 'cents-off' coupon or a scratch-off lottery-type game piece. The use of water-soluble adhesive deters tampering prior to purchase of the product, and the coupon or game piece is subsequently exposed when the water soluble adhesive is washed away. The label assembly may include either one, two, or three layers, with the lowermost label being secured to a backing strip or web preparatory to application to the product. When a single layer is employed, it is opaque, and the promotional material is on its lower surface. In a three-layer unit, the game piece may be sandwiched between an outer label having water-soluble adhesive, and the base label which is provided with permanent pressure-sensitive adhesive.

A pressure-sensitive adhesive comprising an at least partially compatible mixture of a thermoplastic rubber and an aliphatic hydrocarbon tackifying system having a softening point of from about 30.degree. to about 80.degree. C. and in which the thermoplstic rubber is present in an amount of from about 15 to about 30 percent by weight, based on the total weight of the thermoplastic rubber and the aliphatic hydrocarbon resin tackifying system, enable high-speed production of matrix-stripped label stock.
