A glass matrix/ceramic fiber reinforcement composite is prepared from a yarn formed by spinning glass fiber and ceramic fibers lengths together, to form a bicomponent yarn. The yarn is weavable and spinnable, and accordingly may be prepared in fabric forms, or in windings, of predetermined shape. The precursor is melted by heating to the temperature of the melting point of glass, which fused the glass into a continuous matrix, surrounding the ceramic reinforcement.

Ceramic reinforced glass matrix

A fiber reinforced resin matrix composite material repair system is provided, which critically employs a resin comprising a catalyst of the formula I: ##STR1## with a multifunctional epoxy resin, the resin system being sealed in a water-proofed environment prior to being coated onto a fiber reinforcement. The coated fiber reinforcement is applied over the damaged area, the damaged portion having been removed, and the surrounding surface smoothed. An adhesive is applied to the remaining surface, prior to application of the patch. The resulting patch, which may further include thermoplastic toughening agents and an enhancer, can be directly cured at temperatures below 212.degree. F. to give physical properties similar to the original material.

Thermoplastics containing imide groups in the polymer backbone, soluble in an unmodified state, are rendered reactive with thermosetting resins by partial conversion of the polymer backbone to provide reactive groups. The modified polymer may be added as microspheres to a thermosetting resin, subsequently crosslinking therewith supressing solvent sensitivity in a fiber reinforced matrix composite comprising the toughened resin as the matrix therefore. The modified polymer microspheres retain their physical identity in the cured composite structure.

Cyanate resin-based foams

A matrix resin system, for the preparation of composite parts, is comprised of a major amount of cyanate resin and an epoxy resin modified by reaction with an isocyanate. The resin system can be toughened by the addition of thermoplastic material, the toughness improvement being enhanced by the addition of a polyester rubber additive. The modified epoxy resin system is itself a resin having good modulus and Tg characteristics. The resin is cured at temperatures of 250.degree.-400.degree. F. in the presence of a metallic complex catalyst, and OH donor.

Toughened, high temperature resin matrix system

A composite tooling part having excellent dimensional stability, which may be prepared at low cost employs a one-component epoxy resin system having a catalyst which is the reaction product of an aromatic dicyanate and an imidazole. Reinforcing materials are incorporated in the matrix, and the resulting prepreg is allowed to cure at low temperature, down to about room temperature, until the free standing state is obtained. Thereafter, if elevated temperature performance is necessary, the product can be post-cured at elevated temperatures, without the need for a high temperature master.

Composite tooling

A latent catalyst for epoxy resin systems is produced by the reaction between an aromatic dicyanate and imidazoles. The catalyst provides good curability, excellent mechanical properties, and remarkably extended shelf life. It also allows curing at room temperature.

A bandage material for forming in place an orthopedic cast comprising a pliant, large mesh fabric carrier formed from a knit of a high-strength, high-modulus fiberglass yarn with a low moisture pick-up, the fabric carrier having openings of relatively large transverse dimension, and being coated with a polymer composition comprising a cold water curable polyurethane prepolymer comprising the reaction product of a polyalkylene ether diol, a polyalkylene ether triol and a diisocyanate.

Cold water curable orthopedic cast

Stabilized, catalyzed polyurethane systems are disclosed which are comprised of a polyurethane prepolymer, a tertiary amine catalyst and a stabilizing agent. To extend shelf life, and lend stability to the composition, the stabilizing agent is comprised of methane sulfonic acid. The stabilizer is suitable for use with most polyurethane systems catalyzed by tertiary amines, and produces longer shelf life or stability with lesser amounts than conventional stabilizers. In a particular embodiment requiring extended shelf life but quick curing times, a catalyst yielding these qualities is bis(2,6-dimethylmorpholino)diethylether. The catalyst, when incorporated in a polyurethane prepolymer coated on a flexible substrate, can be immersed in water, the material thereafter being wrapped about the portion of the patient's body to be immobilized, and cures rapidly, within about 15 minutes. The catalyst can optionally be combined with a stabilizer, such as methane sulfonic acid. When stored in the absence of moisture, such systems have exceedingly long shelf life.

Stabilized, catalyzed water activated polyurethane systems

A curing agent for one package epoxy resin systems is disclosed as a imidazole blocked naphthyl diisocyanate which, when incorporated in epoxy resins, has an extended shelf life and can be cured by exposure to relatively low temperatures. The curing agent is insoluble in epoxy resins that are liquid at room temperature and is useful in connection therewith.
