This disclosure is directed to a repeater () of a wireless communication system () that includes a positioning unit (), such as a GPS receiver, in order to calculate the location of the repeater (). In addition, various techniques are described that exploit the positioning information generated by the repeater () in order to improve the wireless communication system ().

Systems and methods disclosed herein generate pseudo pilot signals including PN phase offsets corresponding to a plurality of pseudo base stations. The pseudo base stations are (1) a plurality of non-physical base stations, and/or (2) physical base stations outside the reception range of the mobile device. The pseudo pilot signals are combined with communication signals from a physical base station to form a series of composite signals. The composite signals are transmitted for reception by a wireless mobile device and are used to determine the location of the mobile device.

A repeater that facilitates communication in a wireless environment comprises a scheduling component that analyzes a schedule relating to when communications are active in the forward link direction and when communications are active in the reverse link direction, the communications are subject to time division duplexing. An amplifier that amplifies received communications as a function of the schedule. The repeater can further comprise a configuration component that configures the amplifier to amplify the received communications in one or more of a forward link direction and a reverse link direction.

This disclosure is directed to a repeater and base station control device implemented in a wireless communication system. The repeater includes a control unit capable of detecting signals sent from various base stations in the wireless communication system. In accordance with this disclosure, the repeater identifies a set of base stations that it can detect, and then sends information indicative of the set of base stations that the repeater can detect to a specific base station that gets repeated by the repeater. In this manner, the repeater can be used to help assess network topology. The base station control device receives the information from the base station and can use the information to update a neighbor list.

A wireless repeater configured for implementation in a wireless communication system is disclosed. The repeater can be configured to receive and rebroadcast communications using various types of airlinks in a wireless communication system. The wireless repeater can include a receiver configured to sense the type of airlink being supported by the repeater. The repeater can then selectively apply a repeater identifying watermark to a signal based on the type of airlink. The repeater may be configured to periodically scan an operating bandwidth for supported airlinks and can configure the watermarking applied to signals within the channels based on the detected airlinks.

Apparatus and methods are disclosed for determining a tolerable propagation delay between a repeater and a base station in a communication system. In one embodiment, a tolerable length of fiber optic cable between a repeater and a base station is determined. More particularly, a desired search window size in time is determined. A maximum fiber optic cable delay value is determined based on the desired search window size. Also, a ratio value of fiber optic cable delay value to fiber optic cable length is then determined. The tolerable length of the fiber optic cable is then determined based on the maximum fiber optic cable delay value and the ratio value.

The system monitors traffic on a CDMA repeater. The system receives a metric related to the operation of the CDMA repeater and automatically determines the amount of call traffic on the CDMA repeater based on the metric. The metric related to operation of the CDMA repeater could be the signal power from the CDMA repeater. The amount of the call traffic on the CDMA repeater could be measured by determining the number of users on the CDMA repeater. The number of users could be determined from a formula where the signal output is proportional to the number of users on the CDMA repeater. The system may also store or transmit to a remote location the metric or the amount of call traffic on the CDMA repeater.

Method and system for monitoring traffic on a code division multiple access repeater

The invention includes methods and systems for use in a wireless communications system, such as a CDMA mobile communications system. A communications device transmits a wireless signal. A repeater system receives a first version of the wireless signal using a first receiver system and receives a second version of the wireless signal using a second receiver system. The repeater system switches between the first version of the wireless signal and the second version of the wireless signal to generate a third version of the wireless signal. The repeater system transmits the third version of the wireless signal and a base station system receives the third version of the wireless signal. In some embodiments of the invention, the wireless signals are Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) signals. In some embodiments of the invention, the switching occurs at a rate of 4 MHz.

Wireless repeater with improved diversity

The invention includes methods and systems to improve the signal diversity between a repeater and a base station in a wireless communication system. A communications device transmits a wireless signal. The repeater receives two versions of the wireless signal using a first receiver system and a second receiver system. The repeater transmits two versions of the wireless signal that correspond to the two received versions. The repeater transmits the two versions with different signal polarizations so they can be isolated from one another at the base station. The base station receives the two versions from the repeater and isolates each version based on the difference in polarization. The base station processes the two diverse versions to produce a high-quality signal. The use of different polarizations to provide diverse signals between the repeater and the base station lowers signal power requirements and increases the capacity of CDMA systems.

Wireless repeater using polarization diversity in a wireless communications system

The present invention is a novel and improved method and apparatus for transmitting and receiving code division multiple access (CDMA) signals. In a described embodiment of the invention, the radio frequency (RF) signals are received through a first polarization RF unit and a second polarization RF unit generating right slant samples and left slant samples. The right slant samples and the left slant samples are each searched and multipath processed independently and the resulting sets of soft decision data combined and decoded. In a preferred embodiment of the invention, right slant and left slant instances of the signal are generated and transmitted to increase the likelihood of differently polarized instances of the signal being available at the receive system.
