Paint sludge is mixed with a polyether or polyester polyol. Optionally, lignin in the range of 0.25 to 70% by weight may be mixed with polyol. The paint sludge-polyol mixture is mixed with an isocyanate for curing the material into a mass. Alternatively, the lignin-polyol-paint sludge mixture is mixed with an isocyanate for curing the material into a mass. The lignin improves the flame resistance and moisture resistance of the mass. A catalyst may be added to the mixture to improve the rate of reaction.

Lignin and polyether glycol produces a product which has a distinct melt point and melt viscosity. Polyether glycol has a plasticizing effect wherein the lignin can be thought of as the hard resin. When 20 parts of polyether glycol are processed with 80 parts of lignin a new material which has a melt point and a viscosity is created whereas lignin itself has no melt and flow characteristics. The new modified lignin can be cured with hexamine like a phenolic resin.

A process of making sand cores and molds without the necessity of using an amine gas or sulphur dioxide gas to act as a catalyst by coating sand with a foundry resin which is capable of holding the sand in the proper shape after molding of the core or mold which foundry resin may be of a conventional construction. After the core or mold has been formed, hot air having a temperature of at least 180.degree. F. and in the range of from there to 1000.degree. F. is passed through the formed core to harden the core or mold at a rate sufficiently high to satisfy high production conditions without the necessity of toxic amines or sulphur dioxide.

A process for making foundry cores and molds is disclosed as well as the core and molds which are produced as well as a sand binder. The binder is a resin which includes a lignin dissolved in a suitable solvent reacted and/or cured with an isocyanate material. The lignin used contains no more than 2% sodium ions. A polyether polyol may be added which has a functionality of greater than 3 and preferably at least 6. A tin catalyst is disclosed for use in the system which has a valence of +4 and one soluble in the system. A material is added to the system to give the mold or core a resistance to the water in core and mold washes. Suitable materials are propylene oxide derivatives of bis phenol A.

A process for making sand cores or molds is disclosed; the completed cores and molds as well as a binder for holding the sand particles together. The resin binder is used in the process and in the finished product comprising lignin dissolved in a suitable solvent reacted on or cured with an isocyanate material. Curing can be accomplished by the use of an amine along with a catalyst if desired. A polyether polyol may be integrated with the lignin to vary the physical characteristics of the binder.

A thermosetting coating composition adapted to form a flexible cured coating over a variety of substrates, such as metal and plastic containing a hydroxy functional urethane modified polysiloxane graft copolymer and an alkylated melamine crosslinking agent. Hydroxy functional polysiloxane graft copolymers are provided. The copolymer is crosslinkable by hydroxy-reactive crosslinking agent and, in particular, is suitable for use in thermosetting coating compositions adapted to form a flexible cured coating over a variety of substrates, such as metal and plastic. The copolymer has a number average molecular weight between about 1,300 and about 15,000, has a hydroxyl number between about 30 and about 300, and is the reaction product of carbon-carbon double bond-reactive monoethylenically unsaturated monomer with hydroxy functional carbon-carbon double bond-bearing branched polysiloxane macromonomer. The macromonomer is the reaction product of (i) isocyanato monomer having the formula: ##STR1## with (ii) hydroxy functional polysiloxane reactant containing 0-10 urethane linkages per molecule.

This invention relates to flexible coating compositions which have excellent adherence to metal or plastic and possess superior weathering properties. More particularly, the invention relates to coating compositions which comprises hydroxy-containing urethane modified polyesters. The modified polyesters are made from urethane modified diols reacted with polyol and diacid compounds, polyisocyanate crosslinking agent and, optionally, a high molecular weight linear polyurethane.

The clearcoat composition comprises hydroxy-containing urethane modified polyester, made by reacting a urethane modified diol with polyol and diacid component, crosslinkable with polyisocyanates. The basecoat composition comprises hydroxy-containing urethane modified polyesters, made by reacting hydroxy functional polyester with diisocyanate, crosslinkable with amine-aldehyde resins, and pigment. Optionally, either or both compositions may comprise a high molecular weight linear polyurethane.
