A scanner includes a gate to receive a media carrying an image to be scanned. A frame is movable toward and away from the gate between a scanning position and a retracted position spaced further away from the gate than the scanning position. A sensor and a lens mounted on the frame, which sensor and lens move with the frame between the scanning and retracted positions, so that the lens can focus at least part of an image in the gate onto the sensor. A method of scanning images is also provided.

A photofinishing device for handling different format types of photographic film includes a work station with a film interface for photofinishing a respective format type of photographic film. The photofinishing device is provided With a first film deck interface utilized for containing a first format type of photographic film at the work station so that the first format type of photographic film may be photofinished while it is maintained in a specified orientation relative to the work station. The first film deck interface is releasably secured to the work station and replaceable with a second film deck interface capable of containing a second format type of photographic film at the work station. In this manner, when the photographic film in the device is changed from the first format type to the second format, the film decks may be quickly changed so that the second format type of photographic film is maintained in a specified orientation relative to work station for photofinishing.

A development apparatus for applying toner of different colors to electrostatic images at a single development position moves translationally to align each of a series of development units with the development position. The development units are supported in a movable carriage which carriage includes a translation plate. A pinion supported by the translation plate engages a stationary rack to move said translation plate while the plate is supported by rollers resting on the floor of the apparatus. To maintain alignment of the translation plate and pinion with the rack, a pair of rollers engage one of opposite rails integral with the rack while a third roller is spring-urged toward the opposite rail urging the plate and pinion into alignment with the rack.

Receiving sheet jams in a toner image fuser are cleared by raising an upper frame of an image-forming apparatus. A pressure roller in the fuser is fixed to the upper frame and separates from a fusing roller when the upper frame is raised. Inner and outer guides providing a slot for the receiving sheet leading away from the fuser to an output hopper are mounted to separate when the upper frame is raised, permitting clearance of paper stuck between the guides. The outer guide is prevented from following the inner guide as the upper frame is raised, but instead stops at a position covering the fusing roller to prevent touching of a hot fusing roller by the operator while the operator is clearing a jam.

Apparatus for cleaning carrier and toner from surfaces in a copy machine or printer. Two independent cleaning stations are used to remove carrier and toner from different areas in the machine. The location and type of the cleaning stations are arranged so that particles cleaned by both stations are deposited in a common sump or container. The single container is removable by the machine operator to discard the carrier and toner cleaned by both cleaning stations.
