Method of treatment of water effluent with multilayer filter under electric current

A method and system generate reductive and/or oxidative chemical species in an aqueous fluid stream to disinfect and/or remove contamination. A filter is provided having a filter element of at least two porous carbon support layers and a silicate wool or glass wool layer in direct contact with and between the at least two porous carbon support layers. Electric current is passed through the filter element. A fluid stream containing elemental halogens and/or halide salts is passed through the filter element, distributing halogens or halides within the filter element. contaminants from the fluid mass onto the filter element, thereby disinfecting or removing the contaminants. Oxidizing contaminants from the fluid mass are adsorbed onto the filter element, thereby disinfecting or removing the contaminants.

Method of treating contamination in a fluid stream with an electric current

Contaminants are filtered from a fluid flow stream and the filter is regenerated by a process including steps of: providing a filter material comprising both carbon and potassium iodide; passing a contaminated fluid stream in contact with the filter material; adsorbing contaminants from the fluid stream onto surfaces in the filter material; passing an electric current through the filter material with adsorbed contaminant thereon; disassociating contaminant from the surfaces of the filter material; and removing disassociated contaminant from the filter material by carrying away the disassociated contaminant in a fluid flow mass.

A system for applying a novel odor abating solution to an odor-emitting surface includes a storage compartment comprising a solution of iodine having a concentration of at least 0.0005% by total weight of the solution of I; a misting system having mist nozzles that are supported over the odor-emitting surface, creating an aerial environment between the odor-emitting surface and the mist nozzles; misting nozzles configured to spray droplets of the solution into the aerial environment over the odor-emitting surface so that, in absence of any air movement exceeding 1 kilometer/hour, at least 75% of the droplets are suspended in the aerial environment over the odor-emitting surface for at least 10 seconds, allowing at least 1% by weight of the Iin the solution to react with emitted odor before the 75% of the droplets are deposited on the odor-emitting surface. The odor-emitting surface may be within a waste transfer station.

Liquid iodine mist treatment of separated odor-emitting dry waste within a waste management facility

A litter composition is used in the absorption of animal wastes with aqueous content in the waste. The composition may include: a particulate water-absorbing solids carrier; two solid particles of separate salts that will react in the presence of water to generate molecular iodine; and a solid acid releasing system that releases acid in the presence of the water generating iodine in sufficient amount to maintain a pH of between 3.5 and 7.5 with the reacted residue of the two solid particles and the released acid in the water.

Animal litter composition with multiple functionalities

An article is applied to the surface of an article, animal housing environment or animal (including humans) to provide antimicrobial activity when activated with a liquid comprising alcohol. The article may comprise a water and/or alcohol absorbent material; and a composition that reacts with water and/or alcohol to produce molecular iodine. The composition provides a local concentration (in the water and/or alcohol) of at least 5 or 10 parts per million iodine in water and/or alcohol carried by the material (that is actual water supported by the water absorbent material) when the material has 5% by weight of water present in the water absorbent.

Material having antimicrobial activity when wet

Antimicrobial solutions and delivery systems for them use liquid antimicrobial solutions with: at least 80% of total weight of a carrier liquid comprising water, alcohol or a mixture of water and alcohol; at least 0.0001% by weight of the solution of I; at least 0.0001% by weight of CuSO; and sufficient acid in the solution top provide a pH of less than 7.0. A buffering system is also preferable in the solution, and the solution may be provided directly to wounds, burns or other skin damage as a liquid, as a spray or as a gel.

Antimicrobial solutions and methods

An environment is moderated against microbial buildup, and especially bacterial buildup in an area where residual liquid wastes are collected or retained or added into natural ground formations. Water wastes are created, collected in storage areas or retained in natural land formations after the use of fluids to extract hydrocarbons contained in oil sand or oil shale or other hydrocarbon rich formations. The residual water wastes are of the type that generate or provide or promote in or above the fluid at least one waste selected from the group consisting of bacteria, carbon dioxide, hydrogen sulfide, ammonia, mercaptans and organic acids. A combination is provided of at least one of i) a friction reducing polymer for oil extraction and/or a polymer capable of absorbing at least ten times its weight in water (preferably a super-absorbing polymer) and ii) a combination of salts that react to liberate I. At least one liquid waste may flocculated with liberated I(and any cations from the reactive salts) to form a flocculent that has reduced odor and reduced microbial content. By injecting the iodine-generating composition into the hydrocarbon-rich or hydrocarbon providing composition (e.g., the oil sand or shale in its natural underground formation), some of the iodine or iodine producing materials will be present in both the residual water pumped from the source and water retained in the underground formation to reduce microbial growth.

Moderation of oil extraction waste environments

An environment is moderated in an area where animal wastes are collected in a fluid containing compartment. Animal wastes are collected in a fluid containing compartment. The animal wastes are of the type that generate or provide in or above the fluid containing compartment at least one waste selected from the group consisting of carbon dioxide, hydrogen sulfide, ammonia, mercaptans and organic acids. A combination is provided of i) a polymer capable of absorbing at least ten times its weight in water (preferably a superpolymer) and ii) a combination of salts that react to liberate I. At least one waste is flocculated with liberated I(and any cations from the reactive salts) to form a flocculent that has reduced odor and reduced microbial content. The flocculent may be used as a fertilizer.

A process reduces the insect, arthropod or pest content in land mass by providing molecular iodine in the land mass in a concentration in aqueous material in the land mass of at least 10 parts per million. The molecular iodine may be added in gaseous or liquid or solid state, and may be formed in situ in the land mass using available water in the reaction.

Systems providing at least pesticidal activity

A process for improving a liquid carrying system comprising physically disrupting a biofilm on interior surfaces of the liquid carrying system and then providing molecular iodine onto the disrupted biofilm in a concentration in aqueous material onto the biofilm of at least 10 parts per million. The reactants may be provided before physical disruption also. The molecular iodine may be added in gaseous or liquid or solid state, and may be formed in situ in the interior of the liquid carrier system using available or added water in the reaction.
