A system and process for coating pieces or cores of confectionery material, such as chewing gum, with a sugar-based coating or a sugarless-based coating. The solid content of the sugar or sugarless material in the syrup solution is increased, thus reducing the water content and allowing the successive coating layers to be dried more quickly. The syrup solution is maintained at an elevated temperature in order to prevent the syrup solids from precipitating or crystallizing out of solution.

C. present in an amount from about 6% to about 10%, and (e) a component selected from the group consisting of elastomer solvents, emulsifiers, plasticizers, fillers, and mixtures thereof, present in an amount to bring the total amount of gum base to 100%. The center-filled chewing gum compositions may be used with a wide variety of liquid centers. The present invention also pertains to methods for preparing the center-filled chewing gum compositions.

A multi-layered chewing gum composition is disclosed. The composition has a moisture content of less than about 1% by weight of the composition and contains at least two layers each comprising a chewing gum composition. The chewing gum compositions of each layer comprise gum base in an amount of about 15 to about 60% by weight of the layer such that the difference in gum base content between the layers is about 3 to about 15% by weight. The chewing gum compositions of each layer also comprise sweeteners, flavors, and optionally, at least one other conventional chewing gum additive.
