Milling tools, systems, and assemblies may have an adjustable gauge diameter. An example mill may include a body with tracks thereon. The tracks may slope in an axial direction and may be configured to couple to multiple blades. A locking collar may be positioned on the body and may be movable between multiple locking positions. Each locking position may be axially offset from another. At each locking position, the blades may be located at a different axial position on the body. Where the tracks slope, each different axial positions of the blades may also correspond to a different radial position for the blades. A gauge diameter of the blades may be based on the locking positions of the locking collar.

A reaming tool includes a reaming tool body configured to be coupled within a drill string or a string of drilling tools. A plurality of reaming blocks is attached to the reaming tool body at circumferentially spaced apart locations. Each reaming block comprises at least one row of shear cutters and gouging cutters, the gouging cutters in the at least one row disposed rotationally ahead of the shear cutters in the at least one row.

A bearing assembly for a drilling tool. A thrust bearing assembly for use in a drilling tool may include a first thrust frame having a generally cylindrical hollow body with a first inner surface, where the first thrust frame includes: (i) first flow diverters protruding laterally from the first inner surface toward a longitudinal axis of the thrust bearing assembly and (ii) first flow ports formed along the first inner surface between adjacent first flow diverters. The thrust bearing assembly may also include a stationary thrust bearing having a generally cylindrical base with legs extending in an axial direction from the base, where the legs may be generally positioned within the first flow ports.

A mill includes a mill body defining a plurality of blades extending in a direction from a center or rotation of the mill body to a gauge surface. The blades define a cutting profile having a minimum diameter at a longitudinal endmost position. The minimum diameter is smaller than a diameter of a drop ball. The cutting profile has an intermediate diameter at most equal to the diameter of the drop ball at a longitudinal distance from the endmost position greater than the diameter of the drop ball. Shear cutters are mounted on at least one of the plurality of blades, mounted such that at least one shear cutter is mounted closer to a center of rotation of the mill body with respect to other cutters mounted to the blades. At least one insert is mounted to the at least one of the plurality of blades rotationally ahead of the shear cutters.

A cutting element includes a front face and leading face extending between a first and second sides. A leading cutting edge is located at an intersection of the front face and the leading face, and an undulating back-up cutting edge is formed in the front face and extends from the first side to the second side, and defines a leading surface and a trailing surface. A method includes cutting with a tool having a blade coupled to a tool body, and a cutting element coupled to a forward surface of the blade. The cutting element has a leading cutting edge formed at an intersection of front and leading faces, and an undulating back-up cutting edge formed in the front face and defining leading and trailing surfaces. The leading cutting edge of the cutting element contacts and cuts a work piece.

A system and method to facilitate the drilling of one or more lateral wellbores while eliminating one or more trips downhole. The system utilizes a drilling assembly comprising an impregnated drill bit or other suitable drill bit. The impregnated drill bit is coupled to a whipstock by a connector for deployment downhole in a single trip. The connector comprises a separation device which facilitates disconnection of the impregnated drill bit from the whipstock once the whipstock is anchored at a desired downhole location.

A down hole motor assembly with a locking mechanism, and methods for operating said down hole motor assembly. The down hole motor has a housing operatively connectable at an upper end to a drill string. A shaft is disposed within the housing and operatively connected to a motor portion of the down hole motor. A locking mechanism is configured to selectively transmit torque from the housing to the shaft when engaged.

An expandable downhole tool comprises a tubular body, at least one moveable arm disposed within the tubular body and being radially translatable between a retracted position and a wellbore engaging position, and at least one piston operable to mechanically support the at least one moveable arm in the wellbore engaging position when an opposing force is exerted. A method of reaming a formation to form an enlarged borehole in a wellbore comprising disposing an expandable reamer in a retracted position in the wellbore, expanding at least one movable arm of the expandable reamer radially outwardly into engagement with the formation, reaming the formation with the at least one moveable arm to form the enlarged borehole; and mechanically supporting the at least one moveable arm in the radially outward direction during reaming.

A turbodrill has rotor vanes and stator vanes that are asymmetric with respect to each other. The rotor blade on which the rotor vanes are disposed has a reaction of less than about 0.5. A method of designing a turbodrill comprises optimizing a first design of stator vanes and optimizing a second design of rotor vanes using computational fluid analysis.
