A medical infusion pump is disclosed which provides for greatly improved accuracy in the delivery of medicaments to a patient. Among the various features included in the instant invention is a pumping body which serves to deform and reform a tube so as to maintain the initial cross-section thereof and thereby preserve the output accuracy of the pump. Also disclosed with regard to the pumping body is a wholly mechanical synchronization of the pumping body and valves associated therewith and coactive with the aforementioned synchronization a mechanical linearization of output of the pumping body per each pumping cycle. Additionally, several features which serve to enhance the utility of the instant invention are also included therein among which is an associated assembly operative to automatically load or disload a tube or IV set into or out of the pumping body. Associated with the assembly operative to automatically load or disload a tube and disclosed herein is an assembly operative to selectively open or close a slide clamp associated with the tube in such a way as to ensure that the tube is occluded such that in combination with the valves associated with the pumping body, a condition of free-flow of medicament is never realized. Additionally disclosed are sensor housings adapted to measure various quantities associated with fluid flowing through the tube wherein the housings are with associated components adapted to achieve a substantially normal orientation with respect to the sidewall of the tube and in the achieving of such normal orientation, expressing an essentially zero elastic stress gradient across the tube.

The present invention provides an infusion pump having a main body portion. The main body portion includes a display area for displaying user interface information. At least one pump module is provided which is removably secured to the main body portion and adapted to receive an IV tube. The pump module can apply pumping action to the IV tube. The pump module further includes an auxiliary display area for displaying supplemental user interface information. A microprocessor is contained in the main body portion for generating user interface information on the display areas.

A new and improved release holding mechanism for utilization in conjunction with a wrist strap or the like, the present embodiment configured for utilization in conjunction with a caliper-jaws type release. As configured, the present system contemplates unique pivotal connection between the release extension member and the wrist strap, wherein the user can frictionally pivotally position the release relative to the wrist strap within a wide angular range, and the release will remain in the chosen position until re-positioned. The preferred embodiment of the present system contemplates a release system having first and second ends, a release caliper forming the first end and an angled, threaded connection member forming the second end, a wrist strap having inner and outer sides, with a first connection aperture formed therein, a connector tab situated in pivotal connection to the outer side supporting a grommet having a second connection aperture formed therein situated such that the first and second connection apertures are aligned to allow for the passage of the threaded connection member therethrough. Lastly, a first nut is situated in communication with the threaded connection member, in communication with the inner side of the wrist strap, and a second nut is situated also in communication with the threaded connection member, in communication with the grommet, the first and second nuts having juxtaposed in frictional communication therebetween the wrist strap.

An infusion apparatus incorporates a RAM which has a first storage section for storing only one delivery pattern defining an infusion rate and a volume to be infused at the infusion rate, and a PDP storage section for storing a plurality of delivery patterns. In a one-pattern delivery mode, an infusion fluid is delivered according to the only one delivery pattern read out from the first storage section by a CPU. Therefore, infusion is performed at the same rate from the beginning to the end. In a PDP (Program Delivery Profile) mode, an infusion fluid is delivered according to the plurality of delivery patterns read out in sequence from the PDP storage section. Therefore, infusion is performed at various rates. One of the one-pattern delivery mode and the PDP mode is selected by an operator through operation of a mode selector in consideration of factors such as the kind of medication and the condition of the patient.

The present invention provides an apparatus for use in a peristaltic pump 20 which prevents an inadvertent free flow condition prior to loading or after removal of an I.V. tube 26 in the peristaltic pump 20 and which also prevents the inadvertent occlusion of a loaded I.V. tube 26 in the peristaltic pump 20. A standard I.V. tube 26 has a slide clamp 109 provided thereon. The apparatus includes an I.V. tube groove 29 into which the I.V. tube 26 is positioned, a slide clamp receiving area 62 into which the slide clamp 109 is inserted, and a biased sliding member 81 which the inserted slide clamp 109 engages such that the I.V. tube 26 cannot be loaded into the apparatus without the slide clamp 109 occluding the I.V. tube 26. The present invention also contemplates a slide clamp 109, compatible with the apparatus having a surface pad 125 for facilitating automated identification of the slide clamp 109, in cooperation with a nonobstructive sensor 85 in the safety apparatus. The present invention further contemplates a slide clamp 109'. having an I.V. tube receiving aperture 110'with an inner diameter profile which minimizes friction between I.V. tube contacting surfaces 126 of the aperture 110'as an I.V. tube 26 is slid transverse to its length within the aperture 110' and which has a surface pad 125 for facilitating automated identification of the slide clamp.

Intravenous tube safety apparatus

The present invention provides an apparatus for use in a peristaltic pump 20 which prevents an inadvertent free flow condition prior to loading or after removal of an I.V. tube 26 in the peristaltic pump 20 and which also prevents the inadvertent occlusion of a loaded I.V. tube 26 in the peristaltic pump 20. The present invention further contemplates a slide clamp 109' having an I.V. tube receiving aperture 110' with an inner diameter profile which minimizes friction between I.V. tube contacting surfaces 126 of the aperture 110' as an I.V. tube 26 is slid transverse to its length within the aperture 110' and which has a surface pad 125 for facilitating automated identification of the slide clamp.

A display device for indicating the internal pressure of a tube of an infusion device having an infusion drive for supplying an infusion fluid from a solution container to the human body through the tube and a sensor for detecting the internal pressure of the tube. The display device includes a message indicator for displaying the internal pressure of the tube as detected by the sensor. The message indicator has a plurality of alphanumeric display elements each consisting of a plurality of segments. The display elements are used to display a value, in alphanumeric terms, of the internal pressure of the tube. Further, some of the segments of the display elements are used to display the quantitative change of the pressure as a bar graph.

The liquid transfusion apparatus according to the present invention includes a setting device adapted to respectively set a normal level of pressure of the fed liquid and an upper alarm level of pressure of the fed liquid, calculating unit for calculating a percentage of a difference between the detected level of pressure of the liquid and the set normal level to a difference between the set upper alarm level and the set normal level, and display unit for displaying the calculated percentage. The liquid transfusion apparatus is very useful for monitoring the pressure of the liquid which is being administered to a patient.

A flexible tubing occluding device is provided for releasably occluding flexible tubing. The tubing occluding device includes housing that is adapted to receive the tubing and defines a tubing occluding surface against which a transverse section of the tubing is transversely urged and compressed when in an occluded position. A wedge-shaped tongue member is provided for urging the transverse section of the tubing against the tubing occluding surface. The geometry of the tubing occluding surface and the wedge-shaped tongue member cooperate to distribute a relatively low amount of force at the center portion of the occluded tubing and a relatively large force at the distal ends of the occluded tubing, utilizing the mechanical advantage of the wedge-shaped tongue member. The tubing occluding surface is configured so that the bottom half of the occluding tubing generally conforms to its original shape and so that most of the strain energy stored within the occluded tubing is utilized to allow restoration of the top half of the occluded tubing to an open position when the tubing is released from the occluded position.

A medical fluid administration set and a drip chamber (10) for use on the administration set are disclosed. The drip chamber (10) may be used with conventionally available drop counters whereby fluid flow can be monitored. The drip chamber (10) is intended for incorporation into a medical fluid administration set. At least a portion of the inside surface of the drip chamber (10) has a matte or satin finish (20) as distinguished from a glossy finish. The matte finish (20) alters the surface characteristics between solution residing in the drip chamber (10) and the drip chamber (10) itself, thereby preventing substantial upward splash back or bounce back of liquid drops impacting the surface of the fluid in the drip chamber (10) which splash back or bounce back can result in erroneous flow rate indications.
