A method for making high temperature filter media includes the steps of melt-spinning a plurality of fibers of pre-ceramic thermoplastic polymer to form a non-woven textile web of the fibers, curing and cross-linking the thermoplastic polymer to a thermo-set polymer and thermally decomposing the thermo-set polymer to ceramic.

A process for fabricating ceramic composites employs a thermoplastic photo-curable pre-ceramic polymer in which the component is shape by a variety of standard composite fabrication techniques, such as filament winding, tape winding, and woven cloth winding. The process includes steps of passing ceramic fiber monofilament, tow, mat, or woven cloth through a solution of said thermoplastic photo-curable pre-ceramic polymer, applying ceramic fiber monofilament, tow, mat, or woven cloth to a moving flat substrate, using a compaction roller to press the thermoplastic pre-ceramic polymer coated ceramic fiber onto flat substrate using photo-light of the ultraviolet, visible, or infrared light spectrum to induce cross-linking (curing) of the photo-curable pre-ceramic polymer thereby rendering a thermoset polymer and either partially or completely pyrolyzing the now cured pre-ceramic polymer matrix coated ceramic fiber material.

Apparatus and process for making ceramic composites from photo-curable pre-ceramic polymers

An apparatus for controllably mixing air with a combustible gas to form a combustible mixture. The apparatus includes a housing having an internal gas mixing chamber in communication with an elongated narrow gas inlet throat which is formed by a pair of converging, smoothly curved walls. A gas injector manifold is disposed proximate the gas inlet throat and is arranged so that air flows around and about the injector as it is drawn into the inlet throat either by a fan or through aspiration. Due to the novel aerodynamic shape of the walls which form the gas inlet throat, the combustible gas is thoroughly and efficiently mixed with the air to produce a combustible mixture that burns efficiently with a minimum of harmful emissions being produced.
