A method for determining discharge area in hydraulic stimulation operations is provided that includes obtaining one or more treatment data inputs from a well system, and determining a discharge area by applying the one or more treatment data inputs to a function that determines discharge area in terms of volumetric flow rate of the fracturing fluid, wherein the discharge area is a total area of all downhole exits through which the fracturing fluid exits a wellbore into a subterranean formation.

A method for performing a downhole perforating and fracturing operation from a wellbore () positioned within a subterranean formation (). The method includes locating a perforating gun string () within the wellbore (), detonating a first perforating gun () to create a first discrete fracture initiation site () in the formation (), repositioning the perforating gun string () within the wellbore () and detonating a second perforating gun () to create a second discrete fracture initiation site () in the formation (). Thereafter, the method also includes pumping a fracture fluid into the wellbore () and propagating a single dominant planar fracture () from each of the discrete fracture initiation sites ().
