Embodiments described herein are operable in a computing system. The computing system receives first and second commands (e.g., I/O commands). The computing system determines that the first command has a higher priority than the second I/O command, and queues the second command for servicing at a later time. The computing system services the first command, and services the second command after a timeout period based on performance degradation limit that decreases command processing performance of the computing system, overrides the timeout period, and increases a probability of executing the second command.

Probabalistic command aging and selection

Systems and methods are disclosed for probabilistic aging command sorting, including adjusting an execution order for a command based on a probability of the command reaching a time out threshold. The system may determine a probability of a command timing out using a lookup table for a base queue depth, modified by a scalar value obtained from a queue depth adjustment lookup table using the actual queue depth as an index. In this manner, an accurate probability of a command timing out for a given queue depth can be determine without significant computational overhead.

Probabilistic aging command sorting

An apparatus includes a buffer and a processor. The buffer contains a plurality of commands pending for a data storage medium. The processor is configured to sort the commands in an execution efficiency favorable manner, which reveals a most favorable command for execution, compare a skip count for each of the commands to a threshold count, the skip count corresponding to a number of times execution of the command has been skipped in favor of execution of another command, and execute one of the commands having a skip count that has reached the threshold count over the execution of the most favorable command.

Prioritizing commands in a data storage device

A data storage device may generally be directed to a buffer that stores a plurality of command requests pending for a data storage medium and a processor that is configured to skip a first command request and execute a second command request in response to the second command request having an access latency within a first predetermined performance impact range and a power consumption within a second predetermined power savings range compared to the first command request.

Performance and power management for rotating data storage device

A system and method for accessing data stored on surfaces of discs in a disc drive utilizing more than one serpent per recording zone. The serpents are traversed using a defect descriptor table and one or more physical zone tables (PZTs).
