A coated fan rotor blade and method for coating a fan rotor blade. The coated fan rotor blade includes a fan rotor blade; and a coating disposed on said fan rotor blade. The coating comprises a binder; and a filler made up of a plurality of particles. The filler material is incorporated into the binder material, and the particles in the filler interact to produce vibrational damping. In particular, the coating includes small, dense, flattened particles or plates that are incorporated into a thin layer of visco-elastic material, such as rubber, silicone, fluoro-elastomer, or urethane and bonded to the surface of the rotor blade to provide damping of high frequency excitation.

Vibration damper coating

An augmentor screech suppressor for a gas turbine engine includes a screech suppressor liner mounted on a screech housing and an actuator for translating the screech suppressor liner axially forward and aft, with the actuator located outside the outer duct of the engine. In a preferred embodiment in a variable cycle gas turbine engine, a variable area bypass injector (VABI) valve with a circumferentially conical surface slopes into the screech suppressor liner surface and inner and outer crank arms transfer linear motion from the actuator through the outer duct wall, cooperating with idler arms to translate the screech suppressor housing, and thus the VABI valve and screech suppressor linear, axially between open and closed valve position.

Axially translating screen suppressor for a gas turbine engine augmentor

A variable area bypass injector (VABI) for a variable cycle gas turbine engine includes a circumferentially continuous valve with a conical surface sloping into a screech suppressor surface, a circumferentially segmented seal attached to the diffuser, and a valve actuator located outside the outer duct of the engine. Each seal segment is spring loaded to allow for different axial movement between circumferentially adjacent segments, and has a seat portion complimentary to the valve conical surface for sealingly engaging the valve when in closed position. Additionally, the seal segments are shaped with a low aerodynamic profile and cooperate with the VABI conical surface, when the valve is in an open position, to provide an annular conic channel that keeps the bypass flow attached to the VABI valve and core flowpath walls as it is injected into the core gas stream. Inner and outer crank arms transfer linear motion from the actuator through the outer duct wall, cooperating with idler arms to translate the valve and screech suppressor axially between open and closed valve positions.

Variable area bypass injector

A thrust augmentor heat shield for enclosing radially extending fuel pipes which can be attached to and removed from the outer duct wall from within the augmentor. The heat shield includes a hollow, elongate housing extending substantially entirely along the length of the fuel pipe, a nose projecting forwardly from the housing and received within a slot formed in the duct wall and a bolt for clamping the housing to the duct wall and urging the nose of the housing into the slot. The housing includes an opening between the outer duct wall and the diffuser wall for conveying cooling air radially inwardly along the housing, and openings along lateral sides of the housing in registry with the fuel discharge ports of the fuel tube. The housing includes a diffuser flowpath segment such that, when the housings are arranged in a spoke pattern, the segments form a continuous annular wall joined by splined connections. In an alternate embodiment, the outer duct wall includes a strut which extends from the duct wall to the diffuser wall and the housing is connected to it by a bolt and nose connection. With other embodiments, the housing connection includes a wedge-shaped cam mounted on the diffuser wall which jams against a correspondingly-shaped flared upper end of the housing. Another embodiment includes a collar contiguous with the diffuser wall and extended shank shoulder bolts for installation from inside the augmentor through the collar.

A variable area bypass injector (VABI) seal for a variable cycle gas turbine engine includes a circumferentially segmented seal attached to the diffuser. Each seal segment is spring loaded to allow for different axial movement between circumferentially adjacent segments, and has a seat portion complimentary to a VABI valve conical surface for sealingly engaging the VABI valve when the VABI valve is in closed position. Additionally, the seal segments are shaped with a low aerodynamic profile and cooperate with the VABI valve conical surface, when the valve is in an open position, to provide an annular conic channel that keeps the bypass flow attached to the VABI valve and core flowpath walls as it is injected into the core gas stream.

A stowable and self-deployable array antenna includes flat, rectangular antenna panels hinged side-by-side so that when deployed they are coplanar, and they fold like an accordion for stowing. The deployed array antenna is stiffened by lateral stiffening panels hingedly attached to every other hinge between antenna panels, and to the unhinged ends of the antenna panels. Foldable longitudinal stiffening panels hinged between adjacent lateral stiffening panels. Each hinged connection includes a pair of thin spring elements, corresponding to a portion of a cylinder. The two spring elements of each hinge are spaced apart with their concave sides facing, and with the axes of the defining cylinder parallel. The hinge pivots, when the spring elements buckle, about a line orthogonal to a line extending between the cylinder axes. The hinges are used as the structural elements of self-deployable masts. The mast may have a polygonal cross-section.
