An approach for managing mobile agents in a network generally comprises configuring a mobile agent in a secure manner such that the mobile agent will automatically terminate itself if the mobile agent cannot communicate with a specified entity before moving, or the mobile agent cannot successfully communicate with a specified entity within a specified period of time. According to another embodiment, if a management process cannot communicate with a mobile agent within a specified period of time, then the management process attempts to cause the termination of the mobile agent. The management process may contact another management process that has the ability to terminate the mobile agent and request that other management process to cause the termination of the mobile agent. According to other embodiment, the management process may cause the creation and dispatch of a 'hunter-killer' mobile agent configured to locate and cause the termination of other mobile agents.

A method for correlating output of distributed processes includes receiving certain information at a first process of multiple distributed processes that perform one computer application. The information includes a unique identifier for a particular instance of the application that is different from any other identifier for any other instance of the application. The unique identifier is included in data written by the first process to a first data structure. Based on the unique identifier, the data in the first data structure is correlated with data in a different, second data structure written by a different, second process.

Method and apparatus for correlating output of distributed processes

A liquid fertilizer injector system attached to a water source by a water source has an inlet line to input the water from the water source line into the liquid fertilizer injector system. The system's components include a holding tank to receive the water from the inlet line, a collapsible impermeable bag that is filled with liquid fertilizer and is placed in the holding tank, the water from the inlet line collecting in the holding tank and exerting pressure on the collapsible impermeable bag as it collects in the holding tank, an outlet line to disperse the liquid fertilizer back to the water source line, a port position indicator valve on the outlet line, to incrementally control the flow of liquid fertilizer from the outlet line back to the water source line, and a drainage valve to drain any input water in the holding tank.

An approach for implementing policy controls in application programs provides for the execution of code to implement policy constraints in a manner that is generally transparent to application programmers. According to the call redirection approach, routine calls are redirected to a policy broker mechanism. The policy broker mechanism causes one or more policy constraints to be applied and if appropriate, causes the routine targeted by the routine call to be executed. According to the code substitution approach, the code for software application routines for which policy constraints are to be applied is substituted with code that provides for the application of policy controls. The code that performs the original functions may also be maintained, but augmented with additional code to apply policy constraints. Thus, routines normally invoked by application programs, for example, code libraries, do not have to be modified by application programmers to include code to apply policy controls.
