A non-invasive apparatus and related method for measuring the concentration of glucose or other blood analytes utilizes both diffuse reflected and transmissive infrared absorption measurements and may be applied to either in vitro or in vivo sampling. The apparatus and method utilize non-dispersive correlation spectrometry and apply it to liquid blood serum analysis. Spectrally-modified near infrared light from the sample containing the analyte is split into two beams, one of which is directed through a negative correlation filter which blocks light in the absorption bands for the analyte to be measured, and the other of which is directed through a neutral density filter capable of blocking light equally at all wavelengths in the range of interest. Differencing the light intensity between the two light paths provides a measure proportional to analyte concentration.

Non-invasive near infrared measurement of blood analyte concentrations

Conventional omnidirectional lamp light is converted into a narrowly focused, highly intense beam with a power comparable to certain types of lasers. The lamp light is collected and focused with conventional means into an optical coupling cone which condenses the conventionally-focused beam to a very small diameter for launching into a fiber optic cable. An optical terminator at the end of the optical fiber retains collimation of the beam and a power density comparable to certain types of lasers, such as those used in medical applications.

Lamp-based laser simulator

A non-invasive clinical instrument provides for in vivo detection of a restriction in an artery. A microphone is applied to the body over the artery and generates a complex electrical signal which is processed to remove noise and amplified. A digital bandpass filter circuit includes a plurality of individual bandpass filters, each of which covers 1/3 of an octave and covers adjacent octaves to cover the complete spectrum between about 2 to 2,000 hertz. Switched-capacitor bandpass filters are used. Each three bandpass filters separated by one-third of an octave are connected such that setting the center bandpass filter automatically resets the two adjacent bandpass filters to cover a single octave in steps of one-third. The sensed signal which is an AC analog signal is transmitted by an analog low pass filter to block undesirably higher frequency components from the digital filters. Digital low-pass filters connect the analog low-pass filter to the bandpass filters. A display unit includes a multiplexor for sequentially transmitting the several bandpass signals to the horizontal input in proper timed relation. Each bandpass filter includes an AC (RMS) to DC (average) converter for establishing an appropriate DC output signal, which is passed through a sample and hold circuit to freeze the display.

Phonoangiographic spectral analysing apparatus

A passive thermographic analytical method of determining the presence of cancer by scaning of the left and right and of reference body portion of a patient with a breast scanner array which includes a matrix of infra-red energy sensors and reflectors mounted in a close spaced array for producing a pattern of temperature measurements. The array is mounted within an adjustable support to permit spatial positioning and alignment with the left and right breast and the body portion of the arrays. Each sensor produces an analog voltage proportional to the body temperature of the aligned portion of the body. The sensor output voltages are sequentially read and converted into appropriate digital form for storage in a RAM memory of a microprocessor, which includes a pattern recognition program to directly create an automated diagnosis of the radiation pattern from which the normality or abnormality of the breasts can be diagnosed. The various parameters are reduced to a multiple digit number which is displayed. The number is encoded to a particular condition.

Thermographic method of physical examination of patients

A numeric diagnostic electrocardiometer includes an A/D converter for converting an EKG signal at each of the conventional electrodes employed in EKG analysis into numbers which are stored in an assigned memory as time and amplitude signals. The waveform is divided into time segments within which the basic waveshape is known. A programmed logic array stores abnormalities within a range for each segment of the EKG waveforms. The stored samples are read into the programmed logic array and deviation of the waveform beyond that programmed produces a numeric output. The instrument may directly translate any deviation output into a readout code referenced to a suitable manual for each combination of time and sampled data. The individually stored samples may also be read out from the memory. The instrument also includes a heart rate and heart arrythmia detection units for initial analysis of the heart.
