A color scannerless range imaging system comprises four component systems, including an illumination system, an image capture device, an optical assembly and a controller for interconnecting and controlling the component systems. The illumination system separately illuminates a scene with modulated and unmodulated illumination, while the image capture device is positioned in an optical path of the reflected illumination from the scene for capturing a plurality of images thereof, including (a) at least one image of the reflected modulated illumination, whereby the modulation of the reflected modulated illumination incorporates a phase delay corresponding to the distance of objects in the scene from the range imaging system, and (b) at least one color image of the reflected unmodulated illumination. The optical assembly includes a first optical system for imaging a color image of unmodulated illumination from the scene and a second optical system including a modulating stage for modulating the reflected modulated illumination from the scene and generating an interference image representative of range information of the scene. The controller selectively places each of the optical systems in the optical path of the image capture device whereby both range information and color information of the scene are captured.

Method and apparatus for a color scannerless range image system

Apparatus for measuring deflection of a film in a film gate having an aperture illuminated by a primary light source having an output spectrum, includes: a) a reflective photonic probe mounted in the film gate, the reflective probe having at least one optical fiber; b) a measurement light source coupled to reflective photonic probe and emitting a wavelength of light outside of the primary light source's spectrum; c) a photodetector coupled to the reflective photonic probe; d) a narrow pass optical filter located between the photodetector and the reflective photonic probe, the narrow pass filter passing the light from the measurement light source and blocking the light from the primary light source; and e) signal processing electronics connected to the photodetector for producing a signal representing the motion of the film perpendicular to the plane of the film.

Apparatus and method to measure film motion in a film gate

A system for compensating for film flutter in a motion picture film projector during projection of a motion picture film comprising multiple film image frames is described, the system comprising sensing the position of film image frames in a film gate of the projector relative to the focal plane of the projection lens assembly of the projector as the film image frames are being projected, and correcting the position of the film in the film gate of the projector or the position of the focal plane of the projection lens assembly to reduce the distance between the film image and the focal plane of the projection lens assembly as the film image frames are being projected, wherein the correction of the position of an individual film image frame in the film gate or that of the position of the focal plane of the projection lens assembly during projection of the individual frame image is based on the actual sensed position of the individual film image frame in the film gate, or on the position of a previously projected film image frame which was sensed as it was being projected.

System for compensating for film flutter in a motion picture projector

A light emitting diode (LED) illumination device for generating modulated light for a scannerless range imaging system includes circuitry for generating a drive signal having a given phase and frequency characteristic; a plurality of light emitting diodes arranged in a plurality of LED banks, wherein each LED bank comprises a plurality of light emitting diodes connected in series to the circuitry to receive the drive signal; and a switching stage for simultaneously activating the plurality of LED banks such that the LED banks generate the modulated light according to the phase and frequency characteristics of the drive signal.

LED illumination device for a scannerless range imaging system

A scannerless range imaging system includes an illumination system and an electromechanical light modulator. The illumination system illuminates objects in the scene with modulated illumination of a predetermined modulation frequency, and the modulated illumination reflected from objects in the scene incorporates a phase delay corresponding to the distance of the objects from the range imaging system. The electromechanical light modulator, which is positioned in an optical path of the reflected illumination, operates at a reference frequency that corresponds to the predetermined modulation frequency and accordingly modulates the modulated illumination reflected from the object, thereby generating a phase image from the interference between the reference frequency and the reflected modulated illumination. The system further includes an optical system that deflects the reflected illumination to the electromechanical light modulator and redirects the phase image generated by the electromechanical light modulator to an image capture section. A color image may be captured by moving the optical system out of the optical path such that reflected illumination from the object will pass directly to the image capture section without contacting the electromechanical light modulator.
