A control valve for a cam phaser of an internal combustion engine, the control valve including a cylindrical housing, including a first operating connection, a second operating connection, a supply connection, and a tank drain connection configured to drain a hydraulic fluid; a control piston device, including a control piston, a supply tube, a first check valve and a second check valve enabling cam torque recirculation, wherein the control piston device is arranged in the housing and axially movable by an actuator, wherein the first check valve is configured with a first disc portion and a second disc portion and the second check valve is configured with a third disc portion and a fourth disc portion and the first check valves and the second check valve are arranged offset from each other by a compression coil spring.

Control valve for cam phaser and method for mounting the control valve

A cam phaser for an internal combustion engine, the cam phaser including a stator including vane cells; a rotor configured rotatable relative to the stator and including vanes arranged in the vane cells of the stator, wherein the vanes respectively divide the vane cells into advance chambers and retard chambers; a control valve configured to move the rotor at least between an advance position and a retard position, wherein the control valve includes a hollow piston that is axially movable within a piston channel, a pressure medium connection, a tank connection and at least four operating connections including at least one advance connection and at least one retard connection, wherein each of the vane cells includes an advance chamber that is connected to the control valve through the at least one advance connection and a retard chamber connected to the control valve through the at least one retard connection.

Cam phaser and operating method

A valve timing control device, in effect a cam phaser, for an internal combustion engine. The valve timing control device includes a rotor connected to a camshaft and having a plurality of vanes. A stator is engaged with the rotor, and includes a plurality of webs. Pressure chambers are provided between each of the webs and vanes. The cam phaser is configured to automatically locate to its mid-lock position, without having to rely on electronic control. At least one embodiment of the present invention is configured to use cam torque to recirculate oil from one side of the vanes of the rotor to the other.

Mid lock directional supply and cam torsional recirculation

In a hydraulic valve comprising a spool, one or more band-shape check valves and an enclosing bolt or snout, the check valve may be compressed to the point of excessive wear or failure and may impede spool movement. The problem outlined is solved by an inventive hydraulic valve for use with a cam phasing apparatus of an internal combustion engine. The hydraulic valve comprises a hollow bolt or snout, check valves, and a spool disposed inside the bolt while still being able to shift axially within the bolt. The bolt and spool are configured to provide fluid passageways between the spool and the cam phasing apparatus depending on a translational displacement of the spool. Furthermore, the spool is configured to allow an oil flow through the fluid passageway, yet limit a compression of the band-type check valves.

Hydraulic valve for an internal combustion engine

An oscillating-motor camshaft adjuster which provides that, through software, camshaft alternating torque is utilized only in conditions where the torque is adequate and/or it is important to reduce flow consumption. If there is two step lift and the camshaft alternating torque is not adequate in low lift, software can position the spool to utilize some camshaft alternating torque while also tanking oil to speed up the phasing.

A valve timing control apparatus for a combustion engine according to which a rotational member, such as a sprocket, is driven by said combustion engine, a rotor is mechanically coupled with a camshaft for controlling opening and closing of cylinder valves of said combustion engine, a first configuration is provided in which the rotor is locked to the rotational member; and a second configuration is provided in which the rotor is unlocked from said rotational member. In another aspect an operating method of said valve timing control apparatus for adjusting a valve timing of a combustion engine is provided. The apparatus controls a relative rotation between a camshaft and an output shaft, which can either be prevented or permitted.

Valve timing control apparatus and method

A lead frame has slots therein for bayonet type connection to electrical terminals provided on a solenoid valve or group of valves. Projections on the lead frame are disposed between the slots and upon bayonet connection to the terminals closely interfit a web disposed between the terminals on the solenoid. Preferably, support stanchions are provided for the terminals and may be integrally molded with the web.

Connecting a solenoid to a lead frame

A solenoid operated valve has first flux collector, bobbin with coil and an armature assembled onto a valve body with a tubular housing received over the body and first portions of the housing, in the form of tabs, deformed over the bobbin flange to retain the assembly. A second flux collector with adjustable pole price is then assembled adjacent the bobbin and retained in place by deformation of second portions of the housing. The pole piece is accessible exteriorly for adjustment through the end of the housing.

Solenoid operated valve and method of making same

An electro-hydraulic manifold assembly for deactivation of the valves of one bank of cylinders in a V-10 engine. One solenoid valve controls flow of oil to the hydraulic valve lifter/lash adjuster of a single or first cylinder, a second valve controls flow of oil to the lifters/lash adjusters of cylinders two and five and a third valve controls oil flow to the lifters/lash adjusters for cylinders two and three by taking advantage of the common base circle position of the cams for the paired cylinders.

Electro-hydraulic valve deactivation in an engine, manifold assembly therefor and method of making same

A Lifter Oil Manifold Assembly or LOMA has a metal deckplate with a non-metallic valve mount/stiffener having elastomeric seals on the surface contacting the deckplate. The electrically operated valves for controlling flow to individual valve lifters are mounted on bosses formed on the valve mount/stiffener. A bracket retains the valves on the valve mount/stiffener and the valve mount/stiffener on the deckplate when assembled on the engine by through bolts.

Electro-hydraulic assembly for controlling engine valve deactivation

A one-piece filter cartridge is formed by inserting an open ended cylindrical screen and an end screen for the cylindrical screen in a mold and overmolding with engineered resinous material to form spaced annular and axial support ribs for the screen material. The cartridge is suitable for use in an hydraulic circuit for filtering bi-directional and radial flow without backwashing trapped particles from flow in one axial direction. One of the ribs has an annular groove for a seal ring for sealing about the cartridge upon insertion in a flow passage.

Removable cartridge assembly for filtering bi-directional axial flow and radial flow and method of making same

A solenoid valve and manifold assembly for installation on an engine and connecting with hydraulic circuits in the engine for de-actuating the combustion chamber valves of selected cylinders of the engine. A manifold deck is formed with the valving channels and ports therein for connecting to the hydraulic circuits. A gasket is formed with solenoid valve mounting bosses and valving passages as a unitary member and is retained on the manifold deck by a retaining plate preferably stamped from sheet stock with clearance holes received over the valve mounting bosses and secured to the manifold deck over the gasket for sealing the gasket thereon. The valves are inserted in the bosses and retained by a preferably stamped bracket and the bracket, retaining plate and gasket secured to the manifold deck by common fasteners. A common electrical lead frame is received over the valve terminals for making electrical connection to the valves. The assembly of valves and the manifold deck may then be attached to the engine as a unit.

Electro-hydraulic manifold assembly and method of making same for controlling de-activation of combustion chamber valves in a multicylinder engine

A solenoid operated valve is controlled upon increasing energization for greater flow by incrementing by a small fraction of the maximum current a target current level for the desired flow for a short duration followed by energization at the target level. Upon decreasing energization for lesser flow, the valve is energized at a target current decremented by a small fraction of the maximum current for a short duration. The result is a nearly negligible hysteresis.

Method of energizing solenoid operated valves

An improved regulator valve for controlling the purging of fuel vapors collected in a canister and an evaporative emission control system into an intake system of an internal combustion engine employs a solenoid valve assembly with an armature disposed outside of the coil to operate with low friction. A spring separating the armature from the valve member allows the spring to absorb most of the magnetic and gravitational side loading.
