Crystalline, transparent, rare-earth activated lutetium oxyorthosilicate phosphor. The phosphor consists essentially of lutetium yttrium oxyorthosilicate activated with a rare-earth metal dopant M and having the general formula Lu( )Y M SiO , wherein 0.00&lE;x&lE;1.95, wherein 0.001&lE;z&lE;0.02, and wherein M is selected from Sm, Tb, Tm, Eu, Yb, and Pr. The phosphor also consists essentially of lutetium gadolinium oxyorthosilicate activated with a rare-earth metal dopant M and having the general formula Lu( )Gd M SiO , wherein 0.00&lE;x&lE;1.95, wherein 0.001&lE;z&lE;0.02, and wherein M is selected from Sm, Tb, Tm, Eu, Yb, and Pr. The phosphor also consists essentially of gadolinium yttrium oxyorthosilicate activated with a rare-earth metal dopant M and having the general formula Gd( )Y M SiO , wherein 0.00&lE;x&lE;1.95, wherein 0.001&lE;z&lE;0.02, and wherein M is selected from Sm, Tb, Tm, Eu, Yb, and Pr. The phosphor may be optically coupled to a photodetector to provide a radiation detector.

Crystalline rare-earth activated oxyorthosilicate phosphor

The present invention relates to single crystal scintillators and includes a transparent single crystal of cerium-activated lutetium yttrium oxyorthosilicate having the general formula Lu,Y,Ce,SiO,, wherein 0.05&lE;x&lE;1.95 and 0.001&lE;z&lE;0.02. The crystal scintillator of the present invention is dense, bright, rugged, and non-hygroscopic and has a relatively short decay time for luminescence. The invention also includes a scintillation detector using the crystal scintillator, which produces an electrical signal in response to light received from the crystal scintillator upon exposure to gamma rays, x-rays, and the like.

Process for making graded porosity ceramics. A process for making graded porosity ceramics is described which includes the steps of placing a chosen amount of ceramic powder into a mold, compacting the ceramic powder into a green body, applying at least one sintering aid precursor to at least one chosen surface of the green body, allowing the at least one sintering aid precursor to penetrate the at least one surface within a chosen volume of the green body, heating the green body, whereby the sintering precursor generates a sintering aid, and hot pressing and sintering the heated body at a temperature whereby the green body is transformed into the sintered ceramic object.
