Systems and methods relating to a smart elastic fabric tape are disclosed. For example, a method may include interrogating a sensing mesh using an electrical impedance tomography (EIT) device, wherein the sensing mesh is affixed onto skin nearby a musculoskeletal (MSK) region of interest, wherein the sensing mesh comprises a nanocomposite thin film disposed on elastic fabric tape, and wherein the sensing mesh forms a geometrical pattern on the skin; generating, in real-time, EIT conductivity maps from interrogating the sensing mesh; and generating, in real time, strain distribution and strain directionality data of the MSK region of interest based on the EIT conductivity maps.

The present disclosure relates to an energy absorbing three dimensional (3D) structure. The structure may have an outer shell formed from a shell material. The outer shell may have a void forming a core volume. A transformative feedstock is contained in the void. The transformative feedstock is encapsulated within the outer shell, within the void, and provides enhanced energy absorbing properties to the 3D structure.

Systems and methods for monitoring a change to a region of interest over time are disclosed. Exemplary embodiments may: (a) apply one or more layers of a stress-sensitive material to an object of interest; (b) incorporate the object of interest into a region of interest; (c) insert the region of interest with stress-sensitive material into an electrical capacitance tomography (ECT) device to interrogate the region of interest; (d) generate a first map of the region of interest based on captured information from the ECT device; (e) after a first length of time, repeat steps (c)-(d) to generate a second map of the region of interest; and (f) compare the first map to the second map to determine changes to the region of interest based on changes to the stress-sensitive material.

Non-contact tomographic imaging and thin film sensors for sensing permittivity changes

A method for creating multifunctional cementitious composites that provide load-bearing and self-sensing properties. The method involves dispersing conductive nanomaterials (e.g., multi-walled carbon nanotubes) into a polymer (e.g., latex) material from which a thin film is created and deposited (e.g., sprayed) onto aggregates, which after drying, can be incorporated with cementitious materials and desired liquids and cast, along with sufficient number of electrodes, into a form for curing. After curing, the resultant structure can be electrically tested through the electrodes, for structural characteristics, including determination of damage severity and location using back-calculation utilizing electrical resistance tomography (ERT), or electrical impedance tomography (EIT), to generate a spatial resistivity map (distribution).

The present disclosure relates to a method of forming an energy absorbing three dimensional (3D) structure. The method involves forming an outer shell for the 3D structure from a shell material, the outer shell having a void forming a core volume. The method also involves filling the core volume with a transformative liquid. When the 3D structure is fully formed, the transformative liquid is encapsulated within the outer shell and provides enhanced energy absorbing properties to the 3D structure.
