Load balancing in a Hyper-Converged Infrastructure (HCI) environment, in which a compute migration request is received that indicates a virtual machine to be migrated, a source appliance in which the virtual machine is currently executing, and a destination appliance to which the virtual machine is to be moved by the requested compute migration. The technology determines whether performing the requested compute migration would cause the virtual machine to experience an increased remote data storage Input/Output (I/O) performance penalty as a result of moving the virtual machine to the destination appliance. The disclosed technology may prevent the requested compute migration from being performed in response at least in part to a determination that the requested compute migration would cause the virtual machine to experience an increased remote data storage I/O performance penalty as a result of moving the virtual machine to the destination appliance.

Load balancing in a hyper-converged infrastructure (HCI) environment

Storage management system and method for storage migration services

A primary copy and one or more shadow copies of a logical volume are created and discovered by a host rescan performed when the logical volume is initially created. Data storage resources are allocated to the primary copy, but not to the shadow copy. The initial path state of the logical volume describes the path to the primary copy as active, and the path to the shadow copy as unavailable for accessing the logical volume. Movement of the logical volume to the storage appliance providing the shadow copy can be performed without an additional host rescan, by making the shadow copy the new primary copy, making the primary copy a new shadow copy, and updating the path state of the logical volume to indicate i) that the path to the new primary copy is active, and ii) that the path to the new shadow copy is unavailable.

Supporting non-disruptive movement of a logical volume of non-volatile data storage between storage appliances

A hierarchy of multiple levels of storage resources and associated QOS (quality of service) limits and buckets of tokens may be specified. A different QOS limit may be applied to each individual storage resource. The buckets may denote current amounts of tokens available for consumption in connection with servicing I/O operations. Each bucket may denote a current amount of available tokens for a corresponding storage resource of included in the hierarchy. Processing may include receiving a first I/O operation directed to a first storage resource, and determining, in accordance with the buckets of available tokens, whether to service the first I/O operation.

Quality of service for storage system resources

In-band, on the fly allocation of tokens to a token bucket that limits the rate at which input/output operations are performed on a storage resource according to a maximum rate limit, while also supporting a user-configurable burst size limit that allows for a temporary spike in the rate input/output operations are received for the storage resource. An input/output time parameter is adjusted in response to receipt of input/output operations, based on the arrival times of the input/output operations, the maximum rate limit, and the burst size limit, in order to automatically allocate and consume tokens for the token bucket without requiring a separate token allocation thread.
