An abrading device including an advanced burr and appliqu&#xe9; for a burr and a new process for making cutting tools for fine material removal applications such as in bone and tissue surgeries. An appliqu&#xe9; sheet is first engineered by CAD with an abrading surface having cutting facets. The appliqu&#xe9; is attached to a surface of a tool blank and then metallurgically bonded and coated by the BRAZOL&#xae; or Co&#x2014;P process. The tool blank has a proximal shank attachable to a driver and a distal surface to which the appliqu&#xe9; is affixed. Since each facet is attached to surrounding facets and then strongly bonded to the tool, the facets do not dislodge when used to abrade a surface of an object. The BRAZOL&#xae; or Co&#x2014;P coating imparts excellent wear resistance and lubricity to the cutting facets. This results in excellent operational and material removal characteristics. This approach to making surgical and fine industrial tools offers engineered flexibility in design rather than process dependent designs.

Advanced burr, applique for a burr and method of fabricating

An abrader blade with integral depth control wings. The depth control wings which slide on a portion of the material being abraded to limit the depth of abrasion. The cutting surface of the abrasive surgical device is covered with abrading material. In a preferred embodiment tungsten carbide particles are brazed onto the blade substrate with an equal quantity of cobalt phosphorous braizing alloy. In this preferred embodiment an additional coating is added with a braze alloy specially developed for medical cutting. The carbide particles, the cobalt, the phosphorous and metal phosphides formed during the brazing process are all biocompatable. These blades are especially desirable for abrading bone material into particular shapes for interfacing with prosthesis parts. Several specific blades are disclosed.

Abrader with integral depth control

A wear resistant coating includes a mixture or compound of Cobalt and Phosphorous either alone or mixed with one or more alloys to provide a coating for metallic surfaces rendering the metallic surfaces more resistant to wear. A preferred combination of Cobalt and Phosphorous utilized in the present invention consists of 89%, by weight, Cobalt and 11%, by weight, Phosphorous, which combination is at approximately the 'eutectic' ratio, that is, that combination of Cobalt and Phosphorous exhibiting the lowest melting point. The 89Co-11P alloy is mixed with a second alloy including, by weight, about 61.1%Co, 8%Cr, 2.5%Si, 0.04%C, and 28%Mo. Preferred environments of application of the inventive coating include surgical blades, files and burrs, guide slots, drills and drill guides, surgical instruments and medical prostheses and for abrasive particles. The subject coatings have achieved a micro-hardness of 1500 DPH (Diamond Pyramid Hardness), approximately equal to the Rockwell C75 hardness.

Cobalt-phosphorous-base wear resistant coating for metallic surfaces

The present invention relates to a wear resistant coating for metallic surfaces and the method of applying the coating. The coating consists of two nickel-based materials mixed together in a predetermined ratio and then dusted on the surface which use to be treated. The coating is metallically bonded to the metallic surface by heating through a sequence of heating steps. The inventive coating has achieved a hardness of up to Rc59.

Wear resistant coating for metallic surfaces

The present invention relates to a coated gall-resistant surgical saw blades. One such blade includes longitudinal ribs extending outwardly from the opposed faces thereof which combine to define a total blade thickness greater than the width of the lateral extension of the teeth thereof. The ribs are sized and configured to slidably engage a precision slot in a guide means designed to be used to guide the blade in cutting movements. The interaction between the ribs and the slot prevents engagement of the blade teeth with the slot while reducing the surface area of engagement of the blade with the slot to reduce friction. All disclosed blades are coated with a hard, lubricious, metallic, wear resistant coating which is metallurgically bonded to the metallic surface of a respective blade through a coating process forming a part of the present invention.

Coated gall-resistant surgical saw blades

A process for joining or coating carbon-carbon composite components. For joining such components, surfaces of two components are prepared so that they match. An interlayer comprised of a material having a melting point in excess of 2500.degree. F. is sandwiched between the two surfaces and the assembly is held together under compression while it is heated to a temperature sufficient to melt the interlayer material or to a temperature sufficient to cause interdiffussion between the interlayer and the carbon-carbon composite material. In a preferred embodiment of this invention the interlayer material is a carbide former. For example, if zirconium is chosen as the interlayer material, a joint can be prepared at a temperature of 3400.degree. F. which will retain its strength to temperatures in excess of 4350.degree. F. If the second surface is a removable backing, the interlayer provides a coating of the surface of the carbon-carbon composite component.

Process for joining or coating carbon-carbon composite components

A transition joint is disclosed for joining together tubular pieces formed respectively from a low alloy or carbon steel and a high temperature alloy composition having substantially different characteristics such as coefficient of thermal expansion, the transition joint including a plurality of tubular parts interconnected with each other by means of friction weld joints formed at an angle of 90.degree. to the axis of the transition joint, the tubular parts at opposite ends of the transition joint being selected to facilitate in situ welding to the low alloy or carbon steel and high temperature alloy respectively.

Friction welded transition joint

A transition joint is disclosed for joining together tubular pieces formed respectively from a low alloy or carbon steel and a high temperature alloy composition including approximately 20% chromium, the transition joint including a plurality of tubular parts welded together and formed from standard code-approved materials of selected composition with a maximum variation in chromium content of approximately 2-5% between adjacent parts when the chromium content is below approximately 10% and a maximum chromium content variation of approximately 3-7% between adjacent transition parts when the chromium content of either part is above approximately 10% in either part, the transition parts being joined by friction welding and/or fusion welding and/or formed entirely by fusion welding deposition. The transition parts are also graded as to thermal expansion and strength characteristics, and the transition parts at opposite ends of the transition joint are preferably formed from low alloy or carbon steel and high temperature alloy composition respectively to facilitate in situ installation of the transition joint.

Stepped transition joint

In plasma arc welding apparatus of a type including a plasma arc torch which is movable relative to a welding stock and transforms orifice gas into a plasma jet stream directed toward the welding stock, the flow of orifice gas is regulated by a throttle valve, a motor adjusting the valve under the influence of adjustable timing means capable of selectively increasing, decreasing and maintaining at a steady state the flow of orifice gas toward the torch. In order to accurately regulate the throttling valve, the timing means preferably includes an adjustable cam assembly driven by the motor along with the valve and operatively coupled with the motor by one or more switches capable of regulating motor operation in order to achieve desired flow control by the valve.
