The preparation of isocyanurate foams from a recycled polyethylene terephthalate polyol modified with alkoxylated amines and alkoxylated amides is disclosed. These modified foams exhibit improved fluorocarbon solubility, and do not cause the resultant polyols to be monofunctional, but rather difunctional. The foams may be used for building, roofing and sheathing applications.

Terephthalic ester polyols modified with ethoxylated amines and amides

An improved method for preparing amino polyols is disclosed. The method is the Mannich condensation of phenol, formaldehyde and diethanolamine in a molar ratio of (1:1:1), and then alkoxylation with a mixture of ethylene oxide and propylene oxide in a weight ratio of about 5:95 to 20:80 to form an amino polyol of hydroxyl number 440 to 515. The method gives higher yields of aromatic amino polyols of lower viscosity than those of the comparative example.

Modified terephthalic ester polyols and rigid foams therefrom

The preparation of isocyanurate foams from a recycled polyethylene terephthalate polyol modified with aromatic amino polyols, sucrose polyols, ethoxylated alphamethyl glucosides, alkoxylated glycerine or alkoxylated sorbitol is disclosed. These modified foams exhibit improved fluorocarbon solubility. The foams may be used for building roofing and sheathing applications.

An improved method is disclosed for producing amino polyols useful in preparing polyurethane foams. The improvement concerns charging ammonia, a primary amine or a secondary amine to the reaction vessel at the end of the oxide digestion step. The amine or ammonia scavenges the residual oxide and the resulting alkanol amine becomes one of the components of the polyol mixture. Alkanol amines are beneficial components of urethane polyols. In prior art industrial practice, residual oxide is vented to a scrubber system and then stripped to a low concentration.

Preparation of amino polyols

A process for the preparation of N-hydrocarbyl substituted alkanolamines which comprises reacting a specified oxazolidine with carbon monoxide at a temperature ranging from 50.degree. to 250.degree. C. and a pressure ranging from 100 to 2500 psig, said oxazolidine being represented by the formula: ##STR1## in which R is an alkyl radical of 1 to 3 carbon atoms and R' is an alkyl radical of 1 to 10 carbon atoms or a hydroxy alkyl radical of 1 to 10 carbon atoms.

Process for the reduction of an N-hydrocarbyl substituted oxazolidine

Mixtures of aromatic polyols containing tertiary amine and ester functionalities suitable for use in rigid foams prepared by reacting a phthalic acid residue with an alkylene glycol and an amino alcohol are described. These novel polyols may be blended with conventional polyols to yield rigid polyurethane foams with better flammability resistance as compared with foams made from conventional polyols alone.

Novel aromatic amide polyols from the reaction of phthalic acid

An improved method for the production of polyols useful in the application of sprayed high density polyurethane foams is described. The improvement involves varying the formaldehyde to phenol mole ratio to range between 1.25:1 to 1.75:1 to produce a polyol with the desired viscosity. Ordinarily such polyols are prepared by reacting 4.65 to 5 moles of propylene oxide with 1 mole of the Mannich reaction product of a mole of phenol or nonylphenol with 1 or 2 moles of diethanolamine and 1 or 2 moles of formaldehyde. It is particularly surprising that such changes in the formulation may be made without adversely affecting the resultant properties of the spray foam.

A polyurethane foam formulation for use primarily in sprayed applications has been discovered which provides a smoother than average foam surface. The formulation includes the addition of a primary or secondary mono or polyamine having a hydrogen functionality of two or greater. The compressive strengths of the resultant foams are equivalent to or greater than equivalent formulations without the amines, even though the amines also reduce fluorocarbon loss yielding lower density foams.

Covers a polyurethane elastomer of improved moldability, particularly useful in RIM applications which comprises the reaction product of an aromatic polyisocyanate, a high molecular weight polyether triol containing an internal mixed propylene oxide-ethylene oxide segment comprising 2-35% ethylene oxide by weight and 65-98% by weight of propylene oxide and an ethylene oxide cap such that said polyol has a primary hydroxyl content greater than 50% and preferably greater than 90%, and a chain-extending agent.
